• Since we're having an issue with spam and very few people use this website, I've closed Game-Warden to new user registrations. Any FS2, BtRL, SoL, etc questions can be directed to HLP instead.

Public Debate on the current status of GW

Mobius

The Southern Cross
As we're probably aware of, the levels of activity here on GW aren't that comfortable.

After a well-thought discussion a number of fellow GW members, including Karajorma, decided to bring GW back to life. We intend to do it by leading here more people and resurrect the boards with new discussions.

Each team is strongly encouraged bring the forums back to life with blogs, mystery threads, eyecandy threads and so on. :)

Also, we'd like people to post comments and suggestions about the matter.

Well, to be honest, I like GW better ]beacause it's smaller than HLP.

When I visit HLP I get crushed by PMs and new topics, I should look into.
So I visit HLP only when I have a bit more time. I tend to visit GW more often.

I do have some ideas how to bring back some more acitivity to the boards though.
And you can be sure the SoL team will take part in keeping the boards alive.
We've been working on some pretty cool stuff, we have yet to show in public. And right now I'm working on something that might turn out very cool. Something you probably thought would be impossible in FSO. ;)

As for general topics, I guess we should simply start posting those again.
I remember a pretty interesting discussion about languages on GW.

Also, I am planning some forum software upgrades. Usually they are never deal breakers for some but they should help. Anything that you think I can do to help? (Obviously I have been gone for quite a while and that hasnt helped things :( )

One suggestion I had was to take a leaf out of HLP's book and move the hosted projects right up to the top. Unlike HLP where the General Freespace and General Discussion boards are at least busy they're the heart of this place and should really be placed to reflect that.

Keeping the FS2NetD stats link, the FS2NetD forum and the Hosted Squadrons forum together in a distinct multiplayer category, as opposed to spread across two as they are now, might also improve accessibility. May not seem important as activity is low right now, but that's likely to change once a multiplayer oriented TC comes out and the squadrons become active again.

It's also something specific to GW, in that HLP doesn't host multiplayer squadrons. So it's a good idea to give it at least a little spotlight.

[Edit] Also, I'd kill for a list of recent posts on the main index page. That makes it far easier to keep track of what's going on.

Good, good. I like these suggestions. I am getting a to-do list going, please keep em coming!

Question: do you guys like the VBB portal (the thing when you see when you go to game-warden.com) ? I know it isnt really well refined yet but can you see enough potential in the concept to continue improving it?

To be honest, that portal has always seemed a bit off-putting to me. It's not very appealing right now as it's just walls of text in boxes. It could work, I think, but it would need an overhaul. Some ideas:

1) Use small changes in background colour/hue to seperate things like headlines from the actual body of posts in the news section. This will make it easier to browse at a glance. Also, just call it News instead of "Latest threads from our news forum".
2) Pimp some of the more active projects (Like SoL or ED) on the front page, with an image accompanying each. This'll help get away from the wall of text feel. These could possibly go down the right side under the active threads box with a little box of its own for each major project.
3) In the active threads box, get rid of everything but the thread title to make it shorter. To make room for the project pimping.
4) Get rid of unused boxes like top referrers and top downloads. They make the site look inactive.
5) Add a link to the main page at the top of the forums. The one at the bottom is easy to miss.

I think mainsite needs a lot of upgrading, Matthew. Simply look at Sectorgame webpage and compare it ;) And Forum script might need changing to SMF or PHP bb - IMO they're much more userfiendly.

I didnt think sectorgame had a updated webpage right now, just forums? Kinda like us at present

anyways
For the last few of hours I have been trying to upgrade various forum software versions. The process usually goes really smoothly, and if not only minor problems are present.

The shit hit the fan this time because vbportal is refusing to uninstall and then reinstall properly. Because of this I have had to restore pre-upgrade process backup. While you shouldnt notice any changes at all, I can not be 100% certain that the backup has everything configured as before.

Please report any bugs you find

Great! it worked this time. still had trouble. I had to give the database a thorough scrubbing, but it should be 100% functional now.

Inevitably there will be problems arising from the upgrade so please report bugs ASAP

One touch ban and clean doesn't seem to be working. I got this when I tried to ban the last spammer.

Spammer or Bot? No matter how much security you update you never get rid of spammers. Now bots on the other hand.....
