PM Spambots

Anyone else get them? I got obvious spam from CuurioussGirl and GafarozzMan. Might want to ban 'em.

What's really strange is that I've throttled the number of PMs that can be sent. So very few users should be getting them.

Seems to me that the bot isn't spamming the member list but is going to Most Active posters or the list of admins.

Lol. Same here. They're are a lot more of them spamming the forums than there used to be IIRC.

Saying "Make me an admin" instantly pushes someone to the bottom of the list because those who crave power are generally the least suited to wielding it.

Whoops, forgot to follow up sorry. Yeah both PMs are gone now. Also just curious, why not repost the links? Like it hadn't even occurred to me but if it had I would have thought having the links there would be more useful than not?

The people who do this sort of thing do it partly to spam so people visit their site but also because of Search Engine Optimisation. If you can get a large number of disparate websites linking to your site you get a higher rating in Google.

That's why spambots frequently fill out the member information to point to their site too.
