Does story matter?

I've been playing Final Fantasy XIII for the past few days and I can't drop my controller. The story is amazing and I was just wondering as story majorly applies to Final Fantasy should it apply to Star Fox? I ask this because most people would agree that the story so far is sub-par and the original games did not need much of a story. Do you think Star Fox should have a devoted story or should Nintendo drop it all together?

did you type this holding a controller?
My lame joke aside, i don't know, i guess it is a little hard to get a great story going on at a game like starfox, specially considering all crap nintendo done to it.

The great storylines make the great series.
StarFox was awesome without a storyline (at least for the first ones), but I wouldn't say no to a deep plot if it is well written.

Storyline is like anything else. Don't try to add it if it's lame.

OF COURSE IT MATTERS!!!!!!
The whole reason i bother with most of the games i play is to figure out what happens with the story!!!!

*most shooters excluded*

I think how complex a story can/should be depends on the type of game you want to create.

If you have no good way of telling the story, a complex plot can make a game very confusing.

Freespace 2 for example had a fairly complex story (nothing like Final Fantasy, but still...).
The only way they had to tell the player the story were mission briefings/debriefings and dialogs in the game. I quite often heard the story in FS2 was somewhat confusing, or didn't matter much.

Now take a Wing Commander game. Since the third game, they had more ways of telling the player the story, with all their interactive cutscenes. Even the mission briefings were videos.
I wouldn't say the plot of any Wing Commander game was more complex than that of Freespace 2, but it was better told for sure.

Now think about it. Could a very complex story really fit into a Star Fox game, without changing the concept of the game?

In my honest opinion, DaBrain, you could indeed put a complex story into starfox. there are many ways a story can be told. And a 64 remake like the one mentioned in my thread COULD potentially fill in all of the plot holes with a well laid out and told story. but then again, knowing nintendo's current track record that's not going to happen :doubtful:

It is possible in StarFox. They can easily add cutscenes, and the brefings are often long enough to develop something. Just, instead of talking bullcrap in Assault and Command, they should have made something better.

I hate Assault's and Command's Briefing Scenes! Stick with the nice simple one liners like in Lylat Wars and put cut scenes to tell the story somewhere damn else!!!

It’s never going to work this way!

"i hate the cold"
"brr, it makes me hibernate!"
if my teammates started chit-chatting like that in the middle of a briefing i would start slapping them. xD

You know, I am quite wary about attempting to cram a good story into a shooter game like Starfox. I feel like that is what they tried to do in Command, which we all know was terrible.

64 didn't have a very complex plot, and it's the best SF game to date. We loved it for it's gameplay, or at least I did. I thought Assault was aweful because the story was bad and so was the gameplay.

But if, and that is a tremendous if, Nintendo or the SoL team could fit a great story and killer gameplay into the same game, well, that'd just be awesome.

well im not looking for anything thats like amazing but a story that keeps you going u kno?

Personally, I think videogame plots can be hit or miss. As Da said, depending on the genre and the story you're trying to tell, story may or may not be relevant.

A series like LoZ likely couldn't live today without story. In the same vein, games like Pikmin don't really need a "deep backstory."

It just depends on what you're trying to sell. For me, the day StarFox gets a fully fleshed and recognized storyline that makes sense and is immersive/believeable/enjoyable/any of the previous combined would mark the point at which the series is recognized as being one of Nintendo's "greats."

If that day comes, my mind will be blown to a million pieces lol

I was thinking the same thing lol

Anyway back to the topic, even Tie Fighter had a deep complex story. The problem with Flight/Space Sim games and complex story is they can some times be very easily over looked by not only the developer but also the player. So what some times happens in squeal games is the developers didn't think people cared or noticed the story and so they don't spend that much time on it.

Games like Final Fantasy are based really on story, one thing about that series is the games aren't really storyline connected. It will be interesting to see how the two new Final Fantasy games interact with each other because they are the same story from a different point of view. Note though they have been in development at the same time.

Ending point Flight/Space Sim games often times don't depend on story but some of the greatest titles in that genre have had good storylines... is there a correlation?
