At humanity's current level of technological advancement, if something bad happened, the human race would die and there would be relatively little we could do about it. For example, say our sun goes supernova, we wouldn't be able to truly do anything that would make a difference. Only a select few individuals would be able to board spaceships before the explosion hit Earth, and those few would most likely not be able to escape our solar system in time (save for the new "experimental" interstellar spaceflight engines that are currently being built).

Our Sun isn't scheduled to go Nova. It's going to become a red giant. And it's not going to do so for the next few BILLION years.

Only a select few individuals would be able to board spaceships before the explosion hit Earth, and those few would most likely not be able to escape our solar system in time (save for the new "experimental" interstellar spaceflight engines that are currently being built).

Except that, even if there are lifeforms around that think of themselves as individuals by that time, they won't be anything we would recognize as humans. And anything WE are developing right now will have exactly zero impact then.

the sun is just fine, forget about the nova thing... and even if that's ment to happen it will be so long after you are gone. (obviously I will not be gone since I'm eternal :O )

I vote a slight variation on this! You know the moon base the Americans were planning to build. Well I'm sure they will see it fit to test a 'super weapon' there as its out of jurisdiction of earth treaty's. which will destroy or decrease the mass of moon forcing it to de-oribt and it will come cashing into the earth, or it will be pushed into a new orbit cause huge tide destabilisation and mass flooding.

(no offense is meant to any American users as I'm not stereotyping you as a nation, only those in power who seem to like their weapons)

Or blow it out of orbit and sent it flying into deep space where it can have an exciting adventure each week.
