China is in a civil war, yes, between the People's Republic of China (current communist government, only around 10 times weaker and 40 times more corrupt), and the Chinese Union (nationalist rebels).

As for South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, their connection with Britain makes them eligible for the EU in 2145. The EU is not an economic community like it is now; it's a nation unto itself and the world's greatest superpower (yeah, they're bigger than AMERICAFUCKYEAH :P).

Not shown is the Spacer Commonwealth, due to the whole being in space thing.

Sweet. I guess we're cheering for the nationalists?

Makes sense, but why's Japan on its own? :wtf:

Because Japan has an agenda and culture separate from the EU or US, although they are friendly with both of them. The Japanese are happy with their position of vast economic and military influence in the Pacific and aren't in a hurry to change it.
And yeah, the Nationalist Chinese, allied with Japan, are on the side friendly to the player.

Lot must change in the future for Japan to be a military influence in the Pacific. :p

It must be the Second Era of Enlightened Peace.

Granted, this is 135 in the future. Think of it, 135 years ago Japan was a feudalistic monarchy with samurai tribes going around killing each other.

Japan doesn't really engage in classical imperialism in the 22nd century. It has a great deal of influence, but most of that influence is cultural and economic. Its only real military operations at the beginning of WWIV are in support of the Chinese Union against the PRC. Note the word support--they're working on the Nationalist Chinese's terms, not their own.

Canada are not part of the EU because they didn't opt to join. They're rather content with the way they are right now. Any attacks on them would result in the US going apeshit on the attackers, so their security isn't an issue right now. Of course, with...changing circumstances in the US government, that might change.
