My New Project (TUHOTFU) (porn)
« on: March 30, 2005, 09:59:53 PM »
I just got an idea for a new project. I have made a small start on it already and it seems to be a goal worth reaching. It shall be dubbed:

[drum roll]
The Unabridged History Of The Freespace Universe!!!
[/drum roll]

What I hope to create is a complete history of the Freespace Universe in a history book style format. It starts about 100 years from now, when humans first started moving into space. (Only civillian vessels back then). It then covers how rival countries competed for such mineral-rich areas as the Moon and the Asteroid Belt, and how weapons were first mounted on ships. It describes the big-picture military aspects involved in Freespace, but also the personal lives of fighter pilots, ore miners, Earth-dwellers, Moon-dwellers, etc. It will stick completley to [V] Freespace Canon, but it will then expand on that to create a fuller and richer universe. The book will talk about things on a grand scale, and then focus in on what Beta 3 is thinking on one particular mission. All the gaps in known freespace lore (how did they do this, why did so-and-so happen, etc.) will be filled in with logical yet dramatic explanations. Sometimes it will seem like a storybook and sometimes a history book. But I assure you, It won't ever be boring!

So what do you guys think? Have I got something good going here, or am I just wasting my time?

I like the idea.

But be careful some designers of FS story based mods might try to kiss and/or marry you.  :nervous:

 ... :shaking:

Progress update: I'm now writing at the end of the Great War.

Here is the first chapter for your reading pleasure. It is the shortest chapter so far and talks about man's fascination with space and their desire to explore the cosmos.

In the year 2313, everyone was living as they were 300 years before then. Sure, the compact disks were smaller, the flatscreen TVs were a bit flatter, and life was a bit more technologically advanced. However, there was still crime, rivaling political ideals, taxes, disease, and long, hard days of labor. However, this minimal technological progress between 2000 and 2313 was mainly due to one fact. Man realized that the only way to make giant leaps in technology and to have significant military advantage over rival countries was to launch their empires into space. All scientists had their hands full with this task. Construction on a large-scale space station began. The result was the GTI Arcadia. The technological masterpiece was completed in 2295 by the United Powers of Europe. It served as an operating station for all space exploration activities. The massive space station was three kilometers long and had plasma defensive turrets incase it was attacked by a rival country’s space missile. The Arcadia also served as a shipyard, producing the first cruiser class warship, the UEC Fenris. The Fenris was originally built to orbit the moon and monitor it from close range. It was about 500 meters (about 1500 feet) long, and weighed a whopping 180 tons if it were to land on Earth (which it couldn’t do). The Fenris proved to be a spectacular success, and many more were built. However, under the nose of the UPE, danger was lurking.
China had secretly built its’ own spacefleet of copied Fenris designs. The UPE responded by building hundreds of small ships, known as “fighters” which were no more than 10 meters long. Fighters were armed with forward-facing plasma cannons and were manned by one pilot. They also carried a secondary armament of missiles. Some heat-seeking, some aspect-locking, and some dumbfires. China responded by building its own fightercraft, and other world powers such as the US and Russia built spacefeets. Cold war dominated the next 18 years.

So that's chapter 1. Commentary is welcome!  ;)

To be honest, i would attempt to go from canon.  Hear me out on this.  use the tech room descriptions and try to develop the dates from those.  Also....If the dates (roundabout) are not given, i would back it up a hundred years.  I just don't see the fleet being the size that it is during the 14 years war, with it only being built in 50 years.  50 years for the world to come together under the banner of the GTA, AND build one hell of a fleet.....not enough time in my opinion.  the rest is good though.

The only thing that i would change..is the fenris part, i would make all ships at the stage of the GTA creation be a generation before the fenris/leviathan/orion era.  Know what i mean?

Other than that, it's really good.

Thanks for the encouragment! I love working on this project because writing is fun for me and it's a good break from FRED.

I originally got the dates from the Wiki. The details on dates and events pre T-V war era are almost never mentioned in canon text, such as techroom descriptions. The only real detail I got from them is the destruction of the GVD Eisenhower by a Typhon class destroyer. I like your suggestion, ShadowWolf IH, however, an event occurs which will unite the world under the banner of the GTA quite soon. And remember, the spacefleets I'm talking about are very small. Maybe about 10-20 cruisers and about 150 fighters for each fleet. The first destroyer is built later.

As for the different ships pre T-V war era, I would rather keep the ships familliar to the reader. Mentioning ships no-one knows about doesen't help the reader create a good mental image. For example "The lonely GTC Kentwood orbits the sun in a derelict state. It's crew has passed away several years ago due to a solar radiation burst, and the side of the cruiser's hull is warped and twisted due to the immense heat." It is difficult to visualize an object that never has existed or been described in canon, and I lack the ability to describe an object in detail with words.

So, without further ado, I bring you chapter three!

---
You may have wondered why I mentioned the year 2313 previously. The fact of the matter is that that day could possibly have been the most important day in Terran history. That day marked the discovery of subspace.
The story goes like this: A US science cruiser, the USSC Joule, was patrolling deep in the solar system when it stumbled upon bizarre sensor reading. Scientific analysis concluded that the area contained an invisible wormhole, or a place where an object can warp from one fixed point in the universe to another one. After nearly one year of specially engineering the Joule’s engines, it was ready to test out this bizarre natural phenomenon. The Joule warped into a strange, shifting blue corridor, later to be known as subspace. After traveling for a few minutes in this twisted dimension, it was pulled out of subspace and deposited near the star Delta Serpentis.
Earth was in jubilation! Never before had they even thought of leaving the Sol system! Traveling to Delta Serpentis by conventional methods would take over 90,000,000,000 years with even in the fastest spacecraft, but thanks to subspace nodes, Earth could span this great distance in mere minutes. Obviously, they couldn’t travel just anywhere, as they had to use an already existing jump node to travel in. No one is sure how subspace nodes came to be, but scientists believe it is a natural, randomly occurring phenomena. Delta Serpentis had loads of fueling gas near the star. This gas is very valuable, as it is used to power most space faring vessels. On Earth, fueling gas had to be man made and was very costly and scarce, but in Delta Serpentis, the gas was all pre-made and ready for collecting. As nations set their eyes hungrily on this new resource, scientists found a way to actually open a rift in subspace, and use it to travel short distances within a particular star system. This made it easier for vessels to jump from planet-to-planet without actually traveling the distance. These became known as intra-system jumps. Long distance jumps from star-to-star using a pre-existing jump node came to be known as inter-system jumps. Scientists started research on a form of jumping from system to system by just creating your own rift, but they soon found out that only short distance intra-system jumps were possible.
This, of course, made the jump node out of Sol of extreme strategic importance, since there was no other way to reach Delta Serpentis to harvest its rich gas. World war soon broke out, with the jump node as prize. The world realized that the only way to create a successful inter-stellar society, Earth must unify into one nation. After 2 years of fierce fighting, the United European Powers allied themselves with the America’s. The nations designed and began construction on a super-ship, a vessel that could decisively nullify any threats against it. The Euro-American alliance quickly eliminated all other country’s spacefleets within one year. The war was surprisingly quick for the Euro-Americans, as their secret weapon was not even completed yet! After a few months of putting down riots and rebel groups, the Euro-American alliance now ruled the entire planet. The government renamed themselves the Galactic Terran Alliance. The new government was run exactly like the old governments. A system by the people and for the people. In September of 2319, the mega-warship was finally completed. The GTD Orion was crowned as flagship of the now immense GTA fleet. The destroyer-class vessel was a bit over two kilometers long, and was packed to the gills with death dealing turrets. The image of the ship alone sent chills down the spines of rebel groups planning revolt. This would secure the new government’s military power and discourage rebel activity. The GTA was here to stay.
---

As you can see, the EAA had to build warships quickly in order to keep up with the pace of other technologically advanced nations. Once the GTA was formed, they kept on building to make sure that no-one would mess with them. When they first encounter the Vasudans, they only have 3 destroyers and about 50 cruisers. The real construction starts during the T-V war. Those events will be covered in the next few chpaters.

Sooo.... Questions? Comments?

A little update.

I have decided to back up the dates by 100 years as suggested earlier. I have also added some material to the relativley short first chapter. Nothing worth posting though. The next chapter is on the verge of completion so stay tuned... :)

Alright, I've just finished chapter 4. Enjoy!

---
In January of 2331, Vasudan Prince Mihos was caught in the crossfire of a police squad in battle with a Terran druglord and his cronies. His wounds were severe. The Terran police squad quickly blasted off from Cygnus Prime and headed to the GTM Broadeux. Despite their best efforts, the surgeons were not able to save his life. As soon as the PVN found out about this tragedy, they immediately accused the GTA of placing Prince Mihos in unnecessary risk and terminated the Pan-Galactic treaty, which was formed in the convention aboard Cyclone station. The GTA claimed that they were escorting Mihos when he was attacked by Terran outlaws. The PVN didn’t buy the story. Although the two species were not at war, they cut off trade and avoided each other entirely. Isolated incidents of violence between Terrans and Vasudans were on the rise. One month later, yet another Terran-Vasudan relations disaster occurred. Vasudan diplomat Knum and Terran diplomat John Andrews met aboard the GTI Cyclone. The meeting ended with both of them dead. During a heated argument, gunfire broke out and a massive lasergun battle followed aboard the Installation. The Vasudan guards ended up securing the base. The GTD Orion, the GTD Eisenhower, and the GTD Gaia, the three great Orion destroyers of the GTA, laid waste to the station. Total war was declared the very next day.
Vasudan cruisers ran several Terran blockades in Antares, Beta Aquulae, and Delta Serpentis. By the time they made it to Sol, they had only 12 cruisers and about 290 fighters. The 1st fleet led by the GTD Gaia crushed the invasion force. This defeat made the Vasudans realize that they needed a destroyer class of their own. They quickly constructed the PVD Thanatos. It was easy to tell that the Thanatos was constructed rather quickly. It was not as large or as strong as the Orion class, but it could hold it’s own in most engagements. The Terrans responded by engineering a new class of cruiser, the GTD Leviathan. The Leviathan was a much better armed version of the relatively weak Fenris class, and it had much improved hull strength. The Leviathan even had unforeseen advantages. The Vasudans relied on their superior sight to identify ships, therefore, they couldn’t tell a Fenris from a Leviathan since they were identical on the outside. Vasudans often made the mistake of sending a few wings of fighters at what they thought was a Fenris cruiser, but the fighters were soon decimated by the powerful Leviathan rear cannons.
One month after the deployment of the Leviathan, The Terrans had an iron grip over Antares. Sensing the end was near, the Terrans moved into Vasuda. They only managed to hold the node for one week before being driven back into Antares. The Vasudans then seized the moment and moved more than half of their armada to Deneb and then to Vega, where they met the First fleet headed by the GTD Orion on June 23, 2324. The Vasudan fleet was spearheaded by all of the Thanatos class destroyers that the Vasudans possessed, five in total. What followed was the bloodiest and most costly battle ever. 50,000 Terrans and Vasudans lost their lives that day. After days of fierce fighting, the Vasudans retreated back to Deneb, having lost all five of their destroyers, but not before damaging the GTD Orion so badly that it needed to be scrapped. Than 93 capital ships were annihilated in total, and about 1690 fighters and bombers were vaporized also. This event stunned both Terrans and Vasudans alike. No longer were they simply rivaling species, they were now in a state of all out war. The Vasudans realized that they were out of destroyers, so they designed a much better version and began construction. The next two years were dotted with cruiser versus cruiser skirmishes while both sides were rebuilding their fleets. The feud was reignited once again with the PVD Savior’s completion. The Vasudans immediately besieged the Terran foothold of Antares. The Savior blasted through wall after wall of Leviathan and Fenris battlegroups as it cleaned out the system. The Terrans however, were not caught completely off guard. They quickly bounced back with the GTD Gaia destroying the first PVD Savior. The Vaudans are forced back. The Vasudans fled to Alpha Centuari and could only watch as Terran warships flooded into their home system. The Vasudans were not ready to give up just yet, however. In April of 2327, Vasudans launched a major offensive to retake their planet. They succeed and Terrans are driven back into Antares, right back where they started. The Vasudans, however, get a bit too carried away and try to isolate Ikeya by invading Ribos. Unknown to the Vasudans, The Terrans anticipated this maneuver and set up a huge defense at the node. The Savior was easily destroyed from behind. Unfortunatley for the Vasudans, the Terrans simultaneously launched an attack to retake Antares. The remnants of the 14th Vasudan battlegroup were surrounded in Ribos and exterminated. The Terrans were once again poised to take Vasuda when the Vasudans, in desperation, proposed a cease-fire. It lasted for a month. During that time, the Vasudans were secretly rebuilding their fleet. The Terrans realized this and broke the cease-fire with an invasion in Sirius, but they were too late. Vasudans barreled through GTA defenses, with multiple Savior destroyers engaging and decimating the GTD Gaia in Vega. The Vasudans simultaneously besieged Antares and successfully took the system. With the Terrans stuffed back into Beta Aquilae, they desperately proposed a ceasefire. The Vasudans were spread quite thin across multiple star systems and tired from weeks of fighting so they agreed to the terms.
It lasts the five days after Christmas. The GTA uses this time to reinforce its lines and prepare a counter attack it launches on New Year’s Eve day while the Vasudans are busy recuperating and reorganizing their forces. The Terrans strike back with vengeance, taking advantage of the Vasudan confusion. The GTD Eisenhower plowed through the ill-equipped Vasudan-controlled systems, clearing out Beta Aquilae, Vega, and Antares. The Vasudans, however, anticipated this counterattack and quickly evacuated Ikeya, Betelgeuse, Beta Cygni, and Ribos. They quickly dashed around the GTD Eisenhower back to their home system while the Terrans were busy settling in. The strategic withdrawal of the Vasudans from the dead-end systems proved to be a huge success. The Vasudans now possessed an extremely large military force in Vasuda. Once again, they were back where they started.
In March of 2333, the Vasudans unraveled their latest creation, the PVD Typhon. Designed to replace the unsuccessful Savior, the Typhon had abilities that closely matched the GTA’s Orion destroyers. The PVN Typhon entered Vega from Deneb and caught the GTD Eisenhower and the 4th fleet by surprise. The Typhon along with a wing of Aten Cruisers engaged the Eisenhower and its Fenris escort. The result was a bloody battle that claimed 30,000 Terran lives with Vasudan losses numbering at just over 1500. The Aten wing was annihilated, but that was a small price to pay. When the smoke of battle cleared, only the PVD Typhon was left standing. The destruction of the GTD Eisenhower forced GTA command to acknowledge the threat that this new battleship presented. The Typhon eventually goes down, but not before taking more than 10 Leviathan cruisers with it. It soon became apparent that this constant back-and-forth tug of war between these two species would need some outside intervention to solve. Unbeknownst to Terrans or Vasudans, a third species was about to join the fray, and they would be more powerful than the Terrans and Vasudans combined. They would poses technology that defied imagination, and a warship armada that could swiftly destroy anything that the Terrans or Vasudans threw their way. The Terrans and Vasudans would be forced to create a reluctant alliance for the sole purpose of holding it at bay, and even the Terrans and Vasudans combined couldn’t stop its wrath.
---

Most of these events I got from the wiki, and a few of them I got from the techroom stuff. I filled in the rest with stuff from my imagination. So, how did you like it? Comments are always appreciated!
