[BtRL] A question of Planets
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:23:27 PM »
How will planet collisions be handled?

  • Viper breakup before getting there?
  • Planetary transition to atmo combat?
  • Unable to reach planet due to map wall?
  • Other?

Reason I ask is due to Season 1 where Kara punched out over the moon of a gas giant, then hotwired the raider to get back to the fleet.

Nothing too noteworthy, just something that popped up in my head while looking at the Progress Gallery.

Mind you, I don't know the capabilities of Freespace, so... *shrugs*

You'll never smack into the planets in the demo cause they're background bitmaps rather than models :)

In the full game on the other hand we might be able to have planetary combat depending on what goodies the SCP give us between now and then. FS2_Open can do ground based missions but it can't do perfect seamless space to planet transitions yet.

One more reason to round up your programmer friends and get them interested in this mod :)

Ah, I had been wondering that also, thanks.

The concept of breaking out of atmo in a Viper is a sweet one :). But unless the relative scales were changed (i.e. planets were only a couple of kilometers wide), it'd take a loooong time travelling at ~160m/s. I seem to remember Omniscaper commenting about that in relation to his Death Star model in the Star Wars conversion forum.

IIRC, the time takes for an X-wing to traverse the distance between the special edition CG effects shot of the squadron over Yavin to the DS  trench took 10-15 minutes at 64X speed at 130m/sec. And the Deathstar ( I based its scale on http://www.merzo.net/ )  is MUCH smaller than a planet.

I love space sims that have beautiful planetary backdrops. I wish one day someone could do a nice black hole or neutron star.

Something like this.

Being so close of a wormhole remains something quite dangerous...:naughty:
Some pilots are to be Aces, some others will only bear the name.

yeah... radiation would have killed the crew of that vessel.

seamless transfer between space and atmospheric combat would be FANTASTIC. man id love to see that done.

Yeah, its from Freelancer. The blackhole was never put into the game. I wish it was. It must have been amazing to see in action.

There are few things that truly scare me to my bones. Black Holes are one of those things.:shaking:

^^Don't watch Disney's "Black Hole". Damn that was a scary movie when I was a kid. Couple decades ago...
