Help, can't connect.
« on: October 22, 2006, 10:44:13 PM »
Hi all, I am having some problems connecting to FS2NetD. Ive followed all the FAQ's that I have found. I have a working copy of the latest official SCP build and the fs2open_pxo.cfg file in the data directory.
The first time i tried to connect it failed connecting, taking a long time to do so. I did a little research and found that I had the wrong cfg file. So I updated it and it still fails to connect. Though this time if fails very quickly. I think that its connecting but is not authenticating me. I checked my username/pword and its correct. I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks.

Common error. The FAQ fails to mention that you should copy the cfg file from Data to mediavps\Data (creating it if you don't have it) too.

hmm still doesn't want to work.
this is the cfg file that I am using
64.92.160.250
12000

also, should I have the mediavps mod enabled for online?
Ive tried it both ways with no success.
though on a side note, with the mod disabled. the connection attempt fails much faster than with it enabled.

Also, as far as the router setup goes, is that neccissary to connect to the server? I am behind a school network so if I am behind a firewall/router, there is not much I can do about it. I suppose there is always dialup to fiddle with and I may experiment with that later tonight.

Ok, I just did a full reinstall, ran it both with and without the mod being activated. Then I remembered that somewhere I had read that we should update fs2 before using scp, so i tried that but still no success. Is there an issue with the server or if you create a new user does it take a while for it to be activated (after you follow the email confermation that is). But yeah, scp runs, but i still can't get online.

You should be able to play as soon as the server gets your return email. I suspect the firewall is causing you problems. Get your friends addicted and play on the LAN instead I guess :)

It might also be worthwhile to check the "multi.log" for clues (I guess it's located in the data folder with win systems).
Cheers!

Ok, I just tried to connect again with dialup and it still didn't work
I checked the log and this is what it had for the dial up attempt without the mod enabled.

FYI: by with and without mod, I mean the mod files in the launcher as in It is still FS2 SCP just with and without the graphics enabled. (I haven't gotten a straight answer on whether or not they should be enabled.)

So if someone could rumble through this log and figure out what it means, that would be great. All I can make from it is that its failing alot.

Edit: Just had a thought. Do i need to have IPX or netbuoy protocol enabled on my comp? My networking experience makes me think otherwise, seeing how TCP-IP is how 99% of comps these days connect to the internet and the other protocols are for inner network communication but just an idea that im shooting out there.

Temporarly disable any anti-virus or firewall software on you computer see if it works then.  If you have access to another computer with dial up use it to portscan your computer to see if 7808 is open.

10/23 18:14:39~   Network (FS2OpenPXO): Could not initialize Socket!!

That is your main FS2NetD problem.  It couldn't initialize the connection to the FS2NetD server.  The Windows version of the connection code isn't logged very well, so it's a little difficult to know exactly what the problem is, but there are 3 possible errors:

1) It can't initialize Winsock
That isn't likely, since that would indicate something rather screwed up with your system config.  If this were an issue then you are probably seeing other network/internet related problems too.

2) The socket couldn't be created and is invalid
Possible, but not likely.  Again, you would most likely see other network/internet related problems with this one.

3) It was unable to open a connection to the FS2NetD server
This screams of a firewall issue, and is the most likely problem.  Double check that your firewall has support for an outgoing TCP connection on ports 12000 through 12010.  Technically you only need port 12000, but doing the full range might save you from changing it later on.  There won't be any traffic back to this port so you should only need support for an outgoing connection and not for full port forwarding.

Ok I tried disabling the windows firewall and antivirus and tried it again, nothing. Tried it on both dialup and lan. I wouldn't be supprised if my lan is a little funky, I have this program call AEGIS secureconnect that my school requires me to use to connect to their network. It hasn't interfered at all with any other online games i have played (wow, bf2). And even then, it shouldn't have affected my dialup connection. I could understand a firewall issue on the school's router but not on the dialup. Is there any way I can test for the winsock or socket problems and if so is there anyway to fix it?

Well that software has been bought out by Cisco systems and renames Secure Services Client.  Looks like it is designed to force network policy compliance over multiple network adapters.  I did't see anything about dial-up but that doesn't mean it couldn't be forcing policies on that as well.  Can you try using dial-up with that software uninstalled or disabled?  Here's a link to the info on that software.

ran it, didn't help. I tried again on dialup with aegis disabled from the manage services page in win xp and with the windows firewall turned off and after running that utility. at this point Im just going to hope that there is something wrong with my install or i have a corrupted file somewhere in the game that is preventing this and that the btrl multiplayer will work fine when it comes out. Thanks for the help everyone.
