FRED 2 Open?
« on: October 09, 2006, 01:10:44 AM »
Figured it would be easier to just ask this here than register at HLP and whatnot to ask it there. How do I get Fred 2 Open? I've got FSO installed, works fine, but when i open fred from the freespace folder, the SEXP's are just the same as before.

First, are you sure you're opening the Open version? It ought to be clearly marked as such.

Second, are you really sure they're the same? The new ones aren't particularly marked or anything; off the top of my head I would be hard-pressed to name them myself.

If you don't have FRED2_Open I'm betting that you're using 3.6.7 (Which never got an official FRED release) instead of something modern like 3.6.9 RC 7.

Follow this guide to install a more recent build and you'll find that FRED2_Open is in the build download too.

Hmmm. Followed all the instructions from the other thread. Now when I try to load Freespace with OpenGL selected, I just get a generic "freespace has encountered an error and needs to close" dealie. I have the MV_Z pack files just stuck in my Freespace main folder before and it worked, it was laggy but it worked (probably because i have only 1.8GHZ and 720 RAM). Freespace still starts up fine when I select my Direct3D8 ATI Radeon 9800 128MB as the graphics card.

I know it must be a pain in the ass to have people asking you questions all the time, Kara, but do you have any idea what's the trouble here?

Check that to see if you've missed any of the steps.

If that doesn't work run the debug build and tell me if it says anything different.

Ran the Debug Build with OpenGL... still no luck. Just the generic "freespace has encountered an error and must close..." do you want to know what it says in the debug spew?

Would it be my graphics card? I have an ATI Radeon 9800 128MB.

Yeah. The last lines and the first 10-15 are the most helpful.

So, i got a new video card, Nvidia GeForce 6600. FS Open still won't start right! I get the splash screen with the exploding deimos, then this error:

Warning: EFF: Unable to load all frames for 'Alouqua_AniBitmap.eff', stopping at #3

File:c:\temp\fs2_open_3_6_9.t\code\bmpman\bmpman.cpp

what do ya think?

Also did you download the 3.6.8 zeta mediavps and related 710 patches?
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html

If that doesnt help... Ok.. What build are you using? Post the name of the exe file. Also post the current command line (gray box in the launchers features tab)

I'm using 3.6.9. I downloaded the Zpack, if that's what you're refferring to, and the mediavps. i left the advanced effects mediavp out of the folder.
