i was more thinking about weapons, ship balencing would be more difficult. you would need to calculate its thrust capability, its rotational capability, its weapon compatability and number of banks (a 4 point bank is twice as effective as a 2 point), the power of compatible weapons, max missile/ammo load. also stuff like hitpoints, shields, ect. there are alot of interacting variables so just adding up points may not neccisarily work.

you may have to give each variable a wheight, or how much capability that variable adds. for example shields would get a higher wheight than hitpoints, as theyre rechargable. also one must figure out how to handle binary flags, such as stealth, which may be worth a number of points. im not saying its easy, but it is a math problem and it can be broken down. its just a matter of how accurate a formula you can come up with.

it really just requires starting a spread sheet, plugging all variables for the objects you wich to compair, and thencreate a formula to determine a total brownie points value. mace a number of ships comply with the formula to have ~equil brownie points. you use playtesting under the rules of science to either confirm or reject the new formula. play the same mission 3 times each with a number of ships. and compair average mission scores per ship type. tweak the formula untill the differences in the point scores occupy a lesser spread. you want the brownie points to corelate with the scores as closely as possible.

Yea, it is a challenging task. The formula would also need to guard for childish hacks, like ships having nil endurance and speed/maneuverability but huge guns mounted on them. :eek2: Such things wouldn't do much as of their own, but could severely mess up TvT games.
Cheers!

Tough task on that ship balancing, tho I ain't sure if I quite got it. I wouldn't be able to calcuate it :D And then there's always the pilot's skill aspect, some can handle a loki and some don't, so it can be minimal threat to a max one :nervous:

Indeed, this would allow one to customize a ship with emphasis on personal flying style and strong points.
Damn, it seems I need to finally learn some modding skills if this becomes a reality some day :D
Cheers!

as a feature request for builds later than rc7.8 taylor, would you please add an option (in-game or command line or something) which let's us see incompatible earlier version games in multiplayer.  It'd save me having to switch builds if i'm desperate for a game ;)

The existing stuff is getting phased out across the board.  We don't want to make it easier for people to just keep doing what they've been doing.  The FS2NetD server software is being rewritten, which will require an FSO build upgrade for everyone, and we are only going to support 3.6.9+ from now on.  Everyone will have to upgrade soon enough anyway so we might as help force the change, since when we don't force it, no one bothers to actually change.  Forcing the change also makes sure that we get more people helping to find bugs because that just makes the future builds better.

Plus you don't really want to gain access to incompatible builds anyway.  That will just drive you insane.  Everything has been going the incompatible route so long and we are working hard to restore original retail compatibility so that the FSO code base will be ready for the re-introduction of PXO early next year.  It's kind of strange when you sit and think about it, but we are breaking compatibility in order to actually restore compatibility.

Believe me, it's for the best that everyone uses 7dot8 (soon to be 7dot9) or better from now on.  You aren't going to have the choice much longer anyway.

Not to mention it reall helps with the debug process.  Could you imagine the number of false bug reports from version conflicts?  I'm sure I'm driving Taylor crazy enough as it is.  Martellato and I are wondering if we might need to start a fund for his psycotheorapy at the rate we are reporting bugs :D

Would it be possible to have an 'Update FSO' button on the launcher (pointing to a D/L source for the latest FSO/stable binaries)?
It would help new people to keep connected, now when multiplayer has version checking in place.
The fact that FSO now has an actual stable branch really makes things look a lot more promising for multi, compared to 3.6.7.

Personally, after a bit of testing with 3.6.9, I wouldn't mind anymore if support for any of the older builds would vanish :)
Cheers!
