Resurrection ship WIP
« on: April 12, 2006, 09:55:28 AM »
Hey guys - just to keep you informed! Watch thread for progress. I want to have this done by sunday evening. April 16th 06 that is.

So far, this is 15mins worth of work. Since this ship has so many ribs, it's going to gain poly count really fast, and thus I've set a max limit of 45k I dont want to go above this. (that's polygons, not tris, for tris simply multiply the poly county by 2.5):

So far so good. Nice to see a modeller (like melardil) come here and show support by presenting CG work immediately for submission. Your efforts will not go unrewarded if you follow through. I hope you have UV'ing skills as well. That is in such short supply that is bottlenecking model workflow.

If you need high definition screen caps just ask, I got tons I can make for you.

no need mate, the guy that made the cgi model for the show is a friend of mine. But go ahead and toss them up here anyway, save me some time.

Well not quite friend, but I know the guy lol. On some term.

Zoic will be one of the first places I will apply for internship once I graduate in the fall. I hope Zoic has noticed our little nook. A simple Zoic nod will go a long way with team morale.

Cool, just remember zoic is very hard to get into, even for an internship - so have an awesome demo reel available.

Why have a demo reel when you can have a fully functional free game for download with all your models in it?

Can't wait for the rez ship, don't forget to add the FTL drive onto it so we can blow it up....

And perhaps a few naked sharon model textures while your at it eh ;)

Wow, wow-and-a-half, and wow-some-more 8)
I could do 10 years of this easily. I think this is some of the finest usages of television I\'ve ever been a part of in my life bar none. I\'ve been doing this for 42 years. I\'ve done some really good work on television and in motion pictures, but there\'s nothing like this show. I can honestly tell you that. By far, one of the finest dramatic pieces of work on humanity I\'ve ever seen in my life."

Looks very nice so far, but 45k (and not even triangulated) are a bit too much... You should try to set a way lower limit.

The problem with the poly count is no matter how well I optimize this model, the polycount is be high by nature of design. The girders are poly killers, no matter what I want to do - I remove any more detail than I already am and you wont have a canon model :( But dont worry, I think this'll end up less than 45k ;) Currently it's sitting at 5k and it's about 25% completed, it'll probably end up being at around 25-35k.

35k might be still ok. The (in-game) rendering of a ship with this much detail will be pretty high, but it can use a 'rather' small texture map, which is good for the performance again. So maybe it will perform just ok.
