Even if the majority of 'ribbed' cruisers would be out of service, it still makes sense to model them. IMHO the first cylon war has a lot more FREDing potential anyway. Speaking of the first cylon war, models of the original basestars and raiders will probably be needed for campaigns from that era.

There are allready models of the earlier cylon ships floating around the web somewhere. they were built for a different mod, i think.

Just a quick thing...

I know this thread is long gone and people have moved on, but according to the BSG Mod for Homeworld 2, there were smaller duty ships called 'Firestars'. Don't know if anyone has any info on 'em, but they seemed to be light destroyers, probably tasked with taking out Pirate Fighters and small carriers perhaps. They certainly got munched up by the Cylons though :S

I totally agree with the WWII era carrier group idea, that era (even before...) is the best comparison with BSG and in line with this comparison any secondary/support warship, would only have one role primarily AA gun support (contrasting with modern day, where multi-role seems to be the fashion).

Any secondary/support ship therefore shouldnt have an anti-ship role, (even if it has one or two of the dual purpose flak guns that galactica has it shouldnt use them in an anti-ship role unless as a last resort) - they build battlestars for anti-ship duty.
You are contradicting yourself.

WWII Naval doctrine was to have ship-ship combat with air power still in its infancy and much underestimated (hence the RN's reluctance to replace Fairey Swordfish with Sea Hurricanes or Seafires, and the fitment of large guns to the early carriers).  It was WWII that demonstrated to all navies the significance of maritime air power, and since then the carrier has been the offensive platform, using the rest of her fleet as defensive pickets (destroyers in anti-aircraft role, frigates for anti-submarine).

Therefore, since we have all agreed that BSG reflects more the WWII doctrines, it follows that the BSG fleet escots should have strong anti-ship capability.

Someone explain me why every time I read the title I misread it as "Note To BTRL Staff: Give Us Cookies!"?

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind some cookies.

eek i shouldn't know this but i think Galactica is a Columbia class battlestar.

Actually since Battlestars seem modeled after old WWII carriers like the Essex, Enterprise/Yorktown and Midway classes, covered with guns and such, looking at WW2 battlegroups probably would be a good inspiration for escorts  in Battlestar Groups (BSGs).  Most likely there would be some battleship/cruisers along the lines of Iowa class and Baltimore class ships built to deal with enemy capital ships.  Destroyers and frigates reminicent of the Flecthers Sumner/Gearing classes would serve dual roles as anti strikecraft and scouts.  Plus there would be some sort of fleet tenders/oilers and troop ships.

The cylons on the other hand would probably have more modern escorts like contemporary DDGs, along the lines of Ticonderoga Aegis cruisers and Areligh Burke class guided missle Destroyers

Why would a battlestar need escorts when one is capable of taking on more than one basestar in ship to ship combat? I always thought that is exactly the role of the battlestar - being a hybrid between battleship and carrier.

From the viewpoint of a mission designer I can understand why more ships would make it more interesting, but capital ships duking it out like in freespace 2 won't be the focus of btrl anway, would it?

Personally, I think it would make a more consistent "BSG"-feeling if homebrew military designs aren't too prevalent in the game, but to have some of the civilian ships take other roles in missions than just being the subject of escort missions every time.
dunno.

Remember, the lifeblood of Freespace 2 was the versatility of it's mission editor, and the ease at which dedicated fans could come up with new scenarios. Say a FREDer wanted to explore a scenario in which a small, non-Battlestar military detachment was attacked. You'd need a non-Battlestar ship first.

That's a good point actually.

The place to look for 'new' Battlestar designs will most likely be in 'Razor' On DVD Dec 4 since it features Pegasus in dry dock at Picon Fleet HQ which will most likely/HOPEFULLY have more battlestars in the area (prays to the lords of kobol) plus youve always got some high res grabs of Valkyrie from the season 3 DVD.

Pity we never see Atlantia i bet shes one big beastie of a battlestar.

That would be the case - that rag-tag fleet!  Missions are plentiful - protection, escort etc.  (as with the ubiquitous 'film-can' miner ship).  But you can arm some of them a little.  We need the fleet!

Course, since i am not skilled enough to build any (yet), make that:  Three cheers for the BSG BTRL team and if you could throw some quickie fleet ships at us to play with: Huzzah!
