Monarchy One really got better since Project Kursed too. I mean it was nice back then, but now it really sounds professional.

Also, talking about music, I'm just wondering, will they just play one by one, or is there some kind of system that triggers them depending on the situation ?
That's quite recent in strategy games, RTS among them. Don't know if you ever played Red Alert 3, IMO it was not as good as the two first for the gameplay, but I really liked that system triggering music depending on the threat level.

I mean when you started the game there was a calm music, yet tenseful that helped to build up a nervous ambiant at the wake of a battle, then at the first units skirmishing there were a more rocking music, and if there was a huge battle, a really dynamic music that pulled you in the heat of the fightings, plus it was depending on wether you were losing or winning.

So if ever it happens to be possible, it would be really cool. :)

Right now it's set up to play tracks one by one, but I do want to eventually have situational music like in Red Alert 3 and Medieval 2. The Fleet Ops devs have mentioned implementing that ability into the engine. To my knowledge it actually currently is possible since they redid the engine's sound engine...  just not sure how to do it as of now. :o

Wait, there is an engine within the engine?

An engine can use other engines as components. "engine" is quite a vague term after all. Gaming engines usually use such dedicated "sub"-engines for sound, AI or network...

Indeed, the FO team has been adding in components from other engines as well as writing their own software to add to the aged Armada engine. In terms of sound they recently added in FMOD Ex, which is the sound engine that Starcraft II, Bioshock, and Crysis use (to name a few). As far as I know there's no industry standard word for the sum total of engine components.

Well that's awesome.

Engine related but thread unrelated, is it possible within a same game to use different engines (other than sound AI and such) ? Like one for a RTS part and another for a FPS part ?
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Engines, as such can work independently of their runtime context. That's what Nephalim implied when he said he uses a sound engine present both RTS and FPS games.

That's because sound work the same way in all these games. This may not be the case for other aspects of the games, such as physics and collision, or AI.

Technically it is possible to combine two different game engine types, though it's usually a very difficult process. For instance it would be a nightmare to combine the Armada Engine (which is largely Lua) and the Unreal Engine (Unreal script), but it is possible. In most cases when a game demands for two different gameplay types though it's all usually included in the main engine rather then combining two different ones. Coincidentally, the Armada engine is actually an updated version of the engine used by the game Battlezone (1998), which just so happened to be a FPS - RTS hybrid.

Alright I see.

After all it was done in Spore too, I really loved the concept, but was disappointed that each phase was too short (and spatial phase too long).
But I really liked the civilization phase that let us customize our own vehicles, and I wish anyone would eventually recycle that idea for a full RTS game.

Basically the ideal game would be the strategy part of Total War and battles like C&C series, with FPS/shooter events. :)
This was partly done in Middle Earth too where you had that strategy map and battles similar to Age of Empire but it was too limited.

But I guess I'm asking too much.

Okay, Undying, I'm counting on you to do all that one day. Like, your next game will do all that OK ? It's a deal then.

haven't you ever noticed games will have several names under one big name in the intro? Most often I see a Small Havok engine logo because lots of commercial devs will use their physics in their games.

Wow that was pretty damn fast. Downloading right now.

Okay, I'm not quite fully understanding how to get Star Trek Armada II in the first place.
