News / Upcoming Downtime
« on: May 27, 2007, 04:18:41 AM »
Expect periodic outages during the days of Tuesday - Wednesday . I will be performing forum software updates as well as getting GW a main page again. If it all goes well you should barely (if at all) notice it, but I thought I would forwarn everyone in case something goes wrong.

Tmp2 / Bandwidth usage out of control (FIXED, for now)
« on: April 03, 2007, 10:40:55 PM »
Bandwidth usage is out of control. We need to do something.

STAFF: Right now please make sure that all large file links have been secured or moved. I dont think that just mere html and jpeg documents are the culprit, so please look carefully for any large file that people may be downloading causing this surge.

If this continues, i will have to shut down everything but the forums.
As of right now, are there any substantially large files that lots of people would be downloading that could be causing all of this? I need to know quickly.

Did anyone hand out a link to the beta version that is from this server. Where do the patch files come from, do we know?

This is of utmost priority. Please attend to this.

Taylor, if you are reading this, please get back to me on what I can do to help hunt down the file that is causing the problems.

Tmp2 / I hope you dont mind..

...That i have stickied a 'donations needed' thread in the main BSG forum. Gw and HLP really need to replenish their funds, as we are almost out. Since the forum is getting a lot of traffic right now, we need to capitalize on it.

General Discussion / Neighbors hogging the wireless band
« on: February 19, 2007, 10:36:03 PM »
Ok, so I bought this brand new wireless system at my house that replaced my 4 year old 54g system. The reason for my network upgrade was that after I added add 4+ computers to the network, I found that transmission speeds slowed down significantly. I spent almost $300 buying a brand spankin' new Linksys wireless N router and 2 receivers. The rest of my computers (about 4) still use conventional G and B receivers.
I had about 3 weeks of glorious speed (upwards of 120mb/s constantly with N receivers), when suddenly there was a disturbance on my block. Wireless speeds slowed down to a trickle, especially on the computers at the edge of my network range. Not really having time to care what the problem was I ignored it for the time being. But thats not the case today. I went and discovered that I had a neighbor with a brand new wireless network.

It appeared that he was eating up my wireless band with his piece of shit belkin router. Is this possible? It seems to be so. (God I hate belkin wireless stuff.) It was coming in almost stronger than my home network signal, which was probably further away.

Since the network was unencrypted I took the liberty of adjusting the broadcast strength, SSID, channel and wireless band to values that would better suit me. From the information I could gather from the router interface (however crappy of one it was), the router diddnt even appear to be hooked up to the internet. After a quick network IP scan, not even any computers! For that I have no regret for what i did.

Now i get a somewhat steady 78mbps. Still not as good as it was before, but enough to satisfy me. Has anyone else had something like this happen before? Its weird because other neighbors of mine have put up networks of their own before and its never slowed my transmission speeds down. Could it be just that the router they use is a POS belkin? or does it deal more with proximity?

                                                                       US condemns China 'space weapon'
The United States, Australia and Canada have criticised China over a weapons test it is said to have carried out in space last week. The Americans say the Chinese sent up a ballistic missile to destroy an ageing weather satellite.
They say the test went against the spirit of co-operation both countries aspire to in the area of civil space.
Reports say Britain, South Korea and Japan were expected to express their  concerns to China soon.
Earlier, a report in the American Aviation Week magazine said that US spy agencies had concluded that China conducted a successful test of a satellite-killing weapon on January 11.
It said China knocked out the weather satellite with a "kinetic kill vehicle" launched on board a ballistic missile.
The impact occurred at more than 500 miles (800 km)  above Earth.
Kinda scary isnt it? An action like this will only encourage the USA and Europeans to develop weapons to counter this. Anyone up for another space race, except this time with guns?

Dear Sir,

I've donated a sum to game-warden, in lieu of being able to help with any other aspect of development for this mod.
I've been following it for quite a while, and began to help Lt. Cannonfodder, until domestic issues intervened.
At any rate, I'm fortunate enough to get a bonus at my work, and thought the thing I want the most is this mod to come to fruition.

Happy Holidays to you and the whole crew,
if there's another way I can lend my support, don't hesitate to let me know.

Busithoth gave GW $260 in donations. I thought that I should bring this to you guys' attention.

BTW: I already wrote him a "thank you" letter, but if you guys want to write one too feel free too.

News / About the 2 hour server outage:
« on: January 03, 2007, 01:00:56 AM »
It looks like our server crashed for about 2 hours (5-7 CST). I have rebooted it, and it appears things are back to normal. I am looking into what has caused it. If anyone saw anything weird going on right before it went out, they should report it to me ASAP.
