Tmp2 / freshly trained nugget here with a question.
« on: November 09, 2007, 03:24:43 PM »
I've just PM, with my contact details.
I've never done something like this, or on this scale. So its new to me, The lock-on skin i did were flatpacked and sent to me, i coloured in neon colours, then asked someone to pack them together. THen messed around with the colours until whole sections where one colour. after i was happy with that i started to texture. I'll PM you my msn details. and we'll chat.
But i'd love to help, where even if its something considered small.

I disagree, my dad almost 50, hardly remembers the old series. I only remember re-runs. So the gerneration of people from the old series have better things do do than watch new bsg. and even if they did, they would like it. Its completely different. The only thing that remains are names and shapes. So i think you should rule out rans of the old series making up a bulk of the new series. i would say about 1% of new galacticas fans were actually around, and watched the old series religiously.

My point is how many high end mods do you see now being created for firefly (is this serenity?) or enterprise now their time is up?

Lets remember although the number of downloads behind BTRL was massive. The actuall community of people supporting this mod on a daily basis is extremely low, excluding mods, you've got five or six regulars that check back everyday including me. Its the community supporting the mods that keeps them going.

angelus is completely right, and new BSG is the perfect example.... because of the original BSG's fanbase and continual wanting more, the new show was created. yes the new show is completely different really, but the original fan base is one of the reasons it came about, they new there was already a small demand for it.

my other example from before, Firefly. it's been off the air for years, but thanks to the continual support and love from it's fan base, years after its cancellation, Serenity the movie is filmed and released, because there was demand for more firefly. Fan bases don't just dry up... unless something jumps the shark so bad as to completely alienate anyone who ever liked it, and even that is pretty hard to do.

cant comment on firefly as i've not even watched a single eisode. But im willing to bet that the fan base of the new battlestar (us) had not even watched more than a handfull of epsodes of the oringal series. I know i didn't, all i remember of the old series is some black guy, some kids with robotic dog and bad hair do's - oh wait am i getting confused again.
What has attracted the new generation to new BSG is TV produces spotting a gap in the market, stargate was on its way down, enterprise had turn out to some american propagander tool, and babalon(sp) had died a horrible death. So us fans of our specific sci-fi series need something, anything. If they had decided to re-launch space above and beyond instead we'd be having the same discusson about that! so when battlestar does finish, it'll die and its fan base, like they have in programmes of past move on to newer pastures. Thats why BTRL needs to draw in as many fans as they can now, take advantage of the demand for more material, which helps keep the BTRL staff motivated. Im sure if there was no community supporting this mod, work would dry up... and eventually stop. Designers will move onto the next new thing that facinates them. So for the sake of the game.... and to be blunt, they need get their finger out!

I've offered my services twice before - without reply. But i have no coding experience. But Im a damn good photoshopper, i have access to high Bandwidth server hosting and UK based FTP services. I am an I.T project manager by trade and do Design advertising on the side and have nothing but free time, at work and at home. Use me how you feel fit.

I think it'll be a mistake not to release before the end of S4. come a week fter the final episode of the entire show, i'll have forgotten all about BSG and moved onto to my next facination. You need to capitialise on the success and fan base of the show before it all drys up.

Possible spoilers below
its was quite enjoyable. But funny and unbelievable how they've managed to fit all these events in between the episodes of the last series. All being said, theres lots of new material and design that now need to be considered and keep BTLR's designers busy for a while longer.
That done, those of you choosing to wait til the 24th i believe will be disapointed becuase i don't actually think its that good enough to meet my expectations.

series 4 should be interesting.

The problem is given the nature of the flight physics in this game and the glide function it is just as, if not more important to know where fighters are above, below and behind you. This is why I don't think the default FS2 radar is good enough, it gives enough resolution in front of you but it becomes rather hazy about where things are above and below you. This is why I personally prefer the 3d radar

The current Quadrant warning as far as I know only warns when there is an enemy craft firing in your direction rather than when there is a bogey on your six.

means the pilot would have to do the equivlant of a Crazy ivan

the best idea i've seen is re-skining a Freespace Radar to look like dradis.

your misssiing the point. Or you reading to far into the said point. Im suggesion SOnar is an Important part of submarne warfare and stragedgy. So, Dradis should be at least Made to Look like it plays a simliar role. DRADIS is named dropped so often in the show, that you get the impression without such technology the show would be very boring. As for making the game too difficult? i dunno, but if the producers of Lock-on expected its users to figure out how to use the radar on the an SU-27, so im sure anything in comparason would be a stitch.

Well i prefer the Mk2, but only becuase it looks better. If i was having to compete, i'd be stupid not chhose the later model

surely you could hold down a button to enlarge the DRADIS screen onto the main display. WOuld be the equivlant of looking down into the cockpit to concetrate on it the screen.

To be honest, when i played BTRL i didn't actually use the radar, i simply toggled through the enemys til the one i had in front of me was targeted. So, for me DRADIS styled radar would only ever be an atempt to give the feel of sitting in a cockpit of viper. Which is essentially the point of the game. If i wanted Freespace with BSG skins i would just downloaded some mini-mods ages ago.

Your kidding me

Sonar is a working proven technology, that's how submarines navigate, stalk and evade their prey.

DRADIS is a show created radar that possibly is useless in an actual dogfight.  You want to replace one of he most important pieces of your HUD with something useless?

Well thanks for pointing out the fact that DRADIS doesn't actually exist... for a second their i fogot myself :doubtful:

Regardless. My point is, that if you want this "SIM" to be realistic to the BSG universe you need to replace the pratical with the cannon. people will always make the best of what they have.

You cant pick and choose, and forget something exists becuase it makes the game harder.

People, like myself have been hanging around now for a while for just a sniff of this becoming reality. Hearing things like, "DRADIS is stupid so we're not putting it in" really dis-heartens. Its like saying well, Viper MkII is so pointless compared to the MKVII so we're just not going to bother putting it in. We want to be the underdogs, we want silly un-comprehensive radar. We dont want full awarness of the battlefield. We want to be a Viper pilot.

lets not forget the real motive for including dradis if not for a practical reason. The Realism effect. its like submarine sim without having sonar.

as stated before. Pilots should be able to customise their craft with these kind of settings before battle for a more geniune feel and personailisation to a craft, as well as logos and battle honors. Perhaps even being able to adjust power from hull/speed/recharge/fuel etc in the hanger to customize the craft for a more bespoke feel.
