Starfox: Shadows of Lylat Voice Acting / SoL Status Update
« on: October 03, 2008, 05:34:29 AM »
Hello to all voice actors!
I just wanted to post to let you know how appreciative the SoL team is of your dedication and of your willingness to provide us with your talent to make this an exceptional fan-produced MOD.

Unfortunately, progress has appeared to stagnate for the past few months, but rest assured that work is being done. SoL is a dynamic MOD based on an ever-changing game, FreeSpace 2. Unlike most game MODs, SoL has to deal with both the advantages and the disadvantages of an evolving engine. While features are constantly being added, SoL has to compensate for the addition of new capabilities with the addition of new content. It is our wish to make the experience as close to home as possible.

Furthermore, when it becomes apparent that the team cannot meet the deadlines that it set (as is often the case), sometimes we must re-evaluate our direction and propose different directives if necessary.

Because there were some shifts in focus for the first release, which I am not sure you were made aware of, a new story was created and adapted to serve as a prologue to the main campaign. You can imagine how this affects you as voice actors. The team must first settle on the specific characters, scenes, in-game chatter, etc. before beginning the voice acting process.

As you may know, sound production is often the last stage in a project. Music is often composed and recorded after content is finished, but music is at least more flexible in that it can be composed to accommodate works-in-progress. On the other hand, voice-acting production must adhere to a finalized product in order to complement the work.

I hope that you remain interested in the project, but I hope even more that when the time comes for you to make use of your talents, you will be enthusiastic.

Finally, I must admit that Real Life left little room for me to focus on the project this past summer, and school has not helped much to change that situation. Still, I'll work to push the project to meet the teams deadlines. We're looking at a Q1 '09 release here, so watch for that.

Starfox: Shadows of Lylat Voice Acting / Update...or lack thereof.
« on: December 18, 2007, 08:03:40 AM »
I will be going to Texas tomorrow (today?) and I will be there for a whole 3 weeks. During that time, I will not be able to record (good) vocals or anything, so my audition is either out or postponed.

I will trying conducting the voice acting project while I am over there, but things will be scarce.

Sorry things have been slow lately, guys. Finals and all that jazz.

But the deadline for the demo has been pushed back, so we do have a bit of time to wiggle with.

Starfox: Shadows of Lylat Voice Acting / Character Auditions
« on: October 12, 2007, 01:13:31 AM »
The time has come to start choosing character roles!

I'm glad that we've got a good group of voice actors now. The list of actors looks like this:

Maximum Iceness

Everyone is active!!

Now what we need to do is decide who fits best with which parts. Here's what all the Voice Actors need to do:
1) Take a look @ the character list. Choose at least five characters that you want to audition for.
2) Look through the character reference thread and try to get a good feel for your character.
3) For the five characters that you have chosen, record at least three lines for each character. Any line will do, but it is best to choose lines that they may have spoken in the SF games.
4) Once you are done recording all of your lines, pack them into a zip archive and upload them. If you need space to upload, e-mail them to me zephyruswing at gmail dot com.
5) Post in this thread, listing all of the characters you have chosen and the lines that you are speaking. Provide a link to your samples in your post.

Please, please, PLEASE have fun!! Star Fox is very cheesy, corny, and cartoony!! Go overboard with your acting and have fun with it!!
And don't forget the "acting" in Voice Acting!! Try to get in the role of your character as much as possible!!

*Please refer to the thread on "protocols" and record your samples according to those guidelines.
*NOTE: Some characters have lines recorded for them already. However, most of those scripts will no longer be used, new lines will be recorded, and the full voice acting team has now been formed. As such, it will probably be best if we all follow the new audition guidelines. This only applies to Strike911, DZComposer, and myself. In spite of this, most of those lines will probably be recycled.  I just want to open things up for our new team.

Starfox: Shadows of Lylat Voice Acting / Character Reference
« on: October 12, 2007, 01:00:50 AM »
The purpose of this thread is to provide good reference for all voice actors on specific characters. Please add good character references, in link form, stating the character and any additional notes as necessary. I think that the best voice acting came out of the 64 series, but if we find voices that better suit the characters we want, please indicate that in your references.

Peppy Hare

Slippy Toad

Ok, below is a list of the characters that will require voice acting in the game. I have only written down characters that will show up in the release of the 1st Chapter. Some characters may not show up, and other characters may be added as necessary.

Each character will have their corresponding actor listed next to them as parts are decided.

Character List

For Chapter 1 Release:
Fox McCloud
Peppy Hare
Falco Lombardi
Slippy Toad
General Pepper
Bill Grey
Cornerian Officer
Attack Carrier Pilot
Cornerian Policeman
Cornerian Fighter Pilot
Venomian Fighter Pilot

Characters for the entire game will be added as necessary.

Starfox: Shadows of Lylat Voice Acting / Generic Scripts Complete!
« on: October 09, 2007, 06:38:56 AM »
Here it is! I've been working on it on and off and decided to sit down for a couple hours and finish it up today.

Go ahead and take a look at it. I decided against posting it here because there's just too much text.

- Some sections I marked as "Not Applicable" because I don't think those kinds of messages will show up. If you think they will, tell me and we can sort out messages for them. I want to delete them from the tables to keep it clean. Will this adversely affect anything?
- There is only one message for each of the characters in each section currently. I'm not sure if there can be multiple messages per persona under one section. Can someone answer that? If we really want it, I can ask karajorma about it.
- I talked to karajorma about enemy generic messages, such as enemy deaths, and he told me that WCS does it for there stuff. He asked me if we needed it. Do we?

Any comments and considerations, post away.

Now would be a good time to contact those voice actors.

Tmp2 / Just Awesome

So, yesterday, I actually remembered that I had that bittorrent going and never downloaded it.

I actually got to play it through yesterday wow
wow! :naughty:

I just love the game play. I have never had any contact with BSG, but I was able to enjoy it because it is an exceptional piece of work.
Voice acting = top notch. I love how all of the chatter was integrated. I love how all of briefings and debriefings really felt like you were in a room receiving one from a person. Everyone felt like a person, and the sound effects truly immersed you into the game.

One of the best things? SLIDING. IIRC, sliding was already sorta implemented, no? I never messed with it, but flying around and using it was such a great and nostagic experience. Any veteran Descent 3 players around? That's exactly the feelings I got while flying, despite the confusing keypresses.

So I was just wondering if you can map the slide keys to the hat of a joystick? Didn't actually check, and atm I don't have a gameport so I might go get a USB stick.

I'm sure you've already spotted some of the typos. There was one error that I did run into. During briefing, the mission after training, trying to look at the ships crashed me and I guess they were already preselected anyway. Also, I played though without the use of missiles at all; they weren't present so I could not load them into the secondary banks. It didn't bother me at all because I loved dogfighting with the guns, but it is a problem.

Anyway, long-winded, but I truly think you deserve a great extent of my appreciation. Awesome job again!
