Shadows of Lylat / Some new music
« on: July 01, 2010, 03:51:57 AM »
It's been a while since we released anything publicly, so here is something new!

The menu music for the prologue release is complete, and there is an MP3 download on the site.

You old-school fans will like this one.

You'll notice:
Control Select from SFSNES
Map screen from SFSNES
SF64 theme and Space Armada polymelodic with part of the SNES credits music

Basically this piece represents the peace that exists before the story kicks-off. Later releases will use different, darker, menu music.

It starts out with a piano, harp, cello, and bass quartet. Solo Horn and trumpet join to repeat the melody lightly, and the rest of the brass come in more majestically before a diminuendo to solo violin and cello with piano. Brass chords in the background. Horn and glockenspiel state the SF theme, followed by solo violin and glock to the loop point.

I don't often write for solo instruments, but I think these are some of my favorite ones I have done. SIPS makes the legato instruments so much more expressive.

Orchestra: EWQLSO Gold Pro XP
Piano: Garritan Authorized Steinway
Percussion: Virtual Drumline 2.5 and EWQLSO

Cubase SL3

Kontakt 2 (Solos enhanced with the SIPS legato Kontakt script.)
Garritan ARIA

Lexicon MX200 rackmount effects processor.

Shadows of Lylat / Nova Bomb in Smash Bros.

Today's Dojo update showed us the Nova Bomb as a throwable item. Big Boom. :D

Or is it a Nova Grenade now?

Shadows of Lylat / Smash Bros. Brawl unveils new Landmaster
« on: October 04, 2007, 12:10:19 PM »
This is what the Landmaster SHOULD have looked like in SFAs:

In case you're wondering why there is a Landmaster in SSBB, it is Fox's "Final Smash" move. You can actually control it. Pretty cool stuff.

I am unofficially participating on's day of silence tomorrow (jun 26). As a result, I have taken down my site and the music for the day.

This event is a protest against a ridiculously huge hike retroactive performance royalties that will be enacted on internet radio stations by the Copyright Royalty Board next month. There is a push to get the US congress to act against this.

I listen to several net radio shows, so this is important to me. Please excuse this downtime.

EDIT: this will effect the ones in the internal, too.

Shadows of Lylat / Yay Cubase!
« on: August 23, 2006, 01:57:31 AM »
My copy of Cubase SL came in today!

No more Note[un]Worthy! I now have something that can access the full potential of the samples I use.

Macros and Custom Keyboard Shortcuts are VERY nice!

Since I just got it, I don't know much about it, but so far it kicks ass!

I can now load Kontakt directly into it, meaning I don't have to waste RAM and CPU to run two programs. Plus, the ability to render outside the realm of real-time means that I can write more complex stuff!

Cubase is just so freaking sweet! :D

After I play with it for a few days, I'll throw a piece together to celebrate!

FS2NetD / I never got my verification email...
« on: February 16, 2006, 04:04:54 AM »
I registered for an account on Sunday (or around there) and I haven't gotten the verification e-mail yet.

I resent it several times and it never arrived to me. Not even into my Spambox.

Any ideas? Did I make a typo? Thanks.

Shadows of Lylat / Do A Barrel Roll!
« on: August 25, 2005, 06:29:49 PM »
Uh, oh.... DZ Made a Joke Song.  :shaking:

This features a piano, drums, slide whistle, siren whistle, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drumline (voices, not drums [VDL 2 sample library]), and Peppy Hare.  :biggrin1:

The song is called "Do a Barrel Roll."

General Discussion / Laser cannons on F-16s by 2007?
« on: August 25, 2005, 01:59:53 AM »
The Air-Force is designing a laser cannon to be mounted on F-16 fighters. This isn't replacing the jets' machine guns yet, rather it is the latest anti-missile defense system.

"The High Energy Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS), being designed by the Pentagon's central research and development agency, will weigh just 750 kg (1,650 lb) and measures the size of a large fridge."

"If everything goes according to plan, an even more powerful weapon producing a 150-kW beam and capable of knocking down a missile will be ready by 2007 for fitting onto aircraft."

Shadows of Lylat / New Music Previews
« on: August 16, 2005, 12:12:26 AM »
The old Music Previews thread is full of dead links to music that will not be used in the game. Therefore, it is time for a new Music Preview thread.

I have re-started the score for the game. The others were written before the beginning of the story was even finalized. It turned out that they will no longer work.

Anyhows, on to the first preview of this new thread:

This might be the main menu music: (40 sec clip)

Shadows of Lylat / Just to flare up some activity in here...
« on: May 03, 2005, 06:17:33 PM »
I don't know how many of you, if any of you, listen to NPR.

But if any of you do and have listened to "Performance Today," you may have heard the Piano Puzzler. The Piano Puzzler is composed by Bruce Adolphe every week and what they do is have Bruce arrange a well-known piece of music in the style of a classical composer. They then have caller (It's a call-in feature) try to guess both the song and the composer.

To hear Bruce's Puzzlers, go here:

This is the same thing, except all of the songs will be from the Star Fox series (Star Fox 2 included).

Since I don't think we could convince Bruce Adolphe to compose special ones for us, I've decided to do it myself. ;)

The rules will be simpler (and the music shorter) than NPR's:

You just have to name the tune. (I am not picking a specific composer anyway).

I'll start with an easy one. ;)

Shadows of Lylat / Can we fix this visual theme please?
« on: January 05, 2005, 03:27:14 AM »
I haven't seen anyone else notice this, but I am getting black text on a navy blue background in the post pages. It is nice to be able to see what you are typing.

I see the problem on Firefox 1 and IE 6.

Please tell me I am not the only one...

General Discussion / A Little Holiday Music For ya!
« on: December 20, 2004, 02:38:43 AM »
DZ Here, Composer for Shadows of Lylat, with a little Holiday/Starfox music crossover! :biggrin1:

I have a series of Nintendo Brass Ensembles that I am doing called Lylat Brass. The first of which is called
"Tour of Lylat" and is on VGMix. I also have LB arrangements from Kirby Superstar and Yoshi's Island (Not on VGMIX, you'll have to grab them from CHS), with arrangements from Zelda, Mario, Earthbound, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, and (of course) more from the Star Fox Series in the works or in planning. Don't expect them soon, though. I have to finish Shadows of Lylat first.

This is a little Lylat Brass Quickie, with a holiday touch! It is the SNES Corneria BGM with God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen! This idea popped into my head at work today and I just had to write it down. This is just a rough sketch, so don't expect pro quality, but it is a neat idea.

I might do a full LB Christmas arrangement before Christmas Day, But that depends on my Job Schedule because if I have limited free time, it would have to go to SoL.

Shadows of Lylat / Music previews

Hi! I'm DZ, Composer/arranger for the Shadows of Lylat mod. There is another composer as well, named Flamewave.

The score (at least my part of it) will consist of both arranged Star Fox music as well as original stuff.

The sample library you hear is the Garritan Personal Orchestra.

I'll drop a little clip in this thread every once in a while so you can get an idea of what you'll have behind your soundeffects when you play this mod.

First sample: (Nov. 18 2004)
