58th Viper Air wing: The White Knights / LISTEN UP 58th!
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:02:26 AM »

I think everybody here is of the assumption that the 58th is in hibernation currently. With not a whole lot to do and a bunch of schedules to balance, it's hard to get people to play the same old gametypes that the demo offers. Some might suggest disbanding the Air Wing, but I think there is a better course of action. The 58th Air Wing is going on detached service. This effectively means any pilots wishing to host or organize a game may do so until the final release of the game. Until a more uniform environment for Beyond the Red Line's multiplayer scene is established, we can't expect everyone to be as organized and efficient as every non-wing pilot relies on the spur of the moment to game.

I know we aren't in the best situation, but if you pilots free reign for a while (which has been the case these past few months) until the final release we'll not only be able to keep the wing together, but keep it together long enough for the rush of new players and games we'll see when the full game is put out. As always we use this board as a forum to keep our wing together, but from now until the full release of Beyond the Red Line we will not have regularly scheduled meets. My goal is simply to let you all know that the 58th may not be hugely active at the moment, but it is not dead.

As always, the Chief and I will be as available as we have worked to keep ourselves over the course of our time here. Anyone wishing to come to us with comments and suggestions may do so. I will continue to check the forums regularly no matter how "dead" they may seem. I also see NO REASON NOT TO USE THE FORUM as a general discussion board when they aren't flying. In the mean time your orders are as follows:

  • stick together
  • keep frosty
  • keep flying

Tmp2 / BtRL made the front page of the Escapist!
« on: February 26, 2008, 02:31:42 PM »

Checking my mail this morning and my weekly newsletter from the Escapist had an article titled "So Game We All". And my brain goes, 'BSG...gaming...could it be?'

Lo and behold it is, in fact, an article about our favorite BSG game.

58th Viper Air wing: The White Knights / Officer's Mess
« on: October 29, 2007, 05:23:34 PM »
Due to a few suggestions I thought it might be a good idea to add a random thread where anybody can talk about anything random. When you're on duty, you have certain things expected of you, but in the officer's mess you can let that all melt away and say whatever you wish. If you feel like telling a story, tell a story. If you want to talk about something goin' on in life, talk away, if you found something interesting on the internet (that is work safe I should add), post it up and let's all take a look at it and talk about it.

Seeing as I lack the creative skills to strike up an actual conversation, I'm going to share with you a funny little video I found on youtube a while ago. Some of you may have already seen it, but for those who haven't take a look and feel free to say what you think. So without further adieu, I present to you:

Brokeback Galactica

Men and women of the 58th,

Due to some technical difficulties, Major Bailey is temporarily inactive. In light of this, I have hereby been ordered to take command of the Air Wing until the Major is back at flight status. Until then, any questions, concerns, or issues come to me. Now, on to the business at hand:

Not too long ago I took a timezone survey so we could better organize squadrons and make it easier for everyone to meet at a more convenient time. Well, we've organized the wing into three seperate squadrons, one for a group of timezones that are close enough together that the pilots in them can still work together. These squadrons are as follows:

Red Squadron

Major Simon "Lightning" Bailey (swiss gripen)
Captain Max "Userfriendly" Schiller (userfriendly)
Lieutenant "Slipstream" (M-562)
Ensign Nathan "Zachary" Zachary (zachary)
Ensign "Boomchoob" (boomchoob)

Green Squadron

Captain James "Gulo" Lupis (KypFisto)
Lieutenant Ilum "Sidewinder" Betrym (RoadRunner)
Lieutenant Edward "Shinzon" Duvall (Shinzon)
Ensign Jonah "Slamscape" Galen (Slamscape)

White Squadron

Captain "Soldier" (PsychoticShroom)
Lieutenant Tony "Smoker" Mann (Smoker)
Lieutenant Simon "Nike" Levy (major_nike)
Ensign "Elthis" (Elthis)
Ensign "Takashi" (takashi)

Userfriendly, because the Major isn't around for now you are the acting squadron leader. Everyone note that your forum handles are in parenthesis "()" so that you can get a hold of each other more easily if need be. I've taken the liberty of PMing squadron leaders so they know to get their butts in gear and back on task.

I know its been a rough road and we've all had a hard time trying to stay active and flying. I won't throw in any "hopefully's" or "with any luck's". What I will say is for you guys to polish your boots and suit up. If you notice a few people missing from role call don't be afraid to send them a tap on the shoulder or two (or three...or five). I've taken the liberty of PMing the squadrons leaders just so they know what's up. At this point I'm handing control of the pilots over to you, fellow captains. As squadron leader's you'll have to get in touch with, organize practices with, and manage them. Keep on your toes and communicate with them and you can keep everybody happy and active.

Good hunting,
James Lupis

58th Viper Air wing: The White Knights / First Training Sortie
« on: April 22, 2007, 07:18:26 PM »

We've been inactive long enough and its time we start flying. On Wednesday April 25th at 2100 GMT (that's 9:00 PM GMT, 5:00 Eastern, 4:00 Central) we're going to fly a few training missions AS A WING! This means it doesn't matter what squadron you're from, you show up and you fly or watch. We understand that this Wing needs to be active for people to check often enough so lets be active in the game. I don't want excuses just show up. Those of you who haven't been checking the forums or posting in it too often should start so we know that you're still breathing.

58th Viper Air wing: The White Knights / Some mixup with our name
« on: April 19, 2007, 12:04:56 AM »
Pilots of the 58th,

Since the 58th was started, it is my assumption that very few are actually sure on the terminology on whether this unit is designated as an Air Wing or Air Group. I would like to shed some light on this matter. We are the 58th Battlestar Air Wing (abbreviated as BSW) on detatchment of Galactica, former lead of Battlestar Group 75 (BSG 75). The terminology used to identify each of these terms are supported in the show itself as well in naval terminology elsewhere (::cough::real world::cough::). Just so this is all cleared up, from here on in, we shall be referred to and advertised as the 58th Air Wing. Now, I know that may require some signature changing and banner tweaking. I know I'm guilty of it, but I'm going to change that as we speak. The true origin of this mixup occured because of our old banner, which refers to us not only as an airgroup, but the 54th airgroup. Hopefully that can be fixed shortly. To answer a question I know is coming, yes the Major is still called the Commander, Air Group (CAG) not CAW or whatever acronym you nuggets come up with. Any further questions may be posed in this thread.

That is all,
Captain James Lupis
Star Wolves Squadron Leader

Okay pilots,

The following statement will clear up any rank problems/trouble you may have as well as provide you with any changes you need to make to your avatar. Military code dictated by the Articles of Colonization sets out the rank sets of all units in the Colonial Military. Seeing as we are only an Airwing, the ranks available are as follows:

The only one authorized to hold this rank is the CAG. Currently that means Major Bailey (callsign "Lightning")

The only pilots authorized to hold the rank of captain are squadron leaders. Unless you have a billet as acting squadron leader, you must be a captain to be a squadron leader and vice versa.

Yes, that's right. Just Lieutenant. No SG, 1st, LE, SLE, XXL, XXX, or ROFLMFAO. If you are a full lieutenant you are most likely the second in command of a squadron. When the squadron leader is not around you have the authority of rank to mobilize your squadron in an emergency and/or help keep things in order.

Lieutenant Junior Grade (JG):

Pilots who are veteran to the AirWing and have proven themselves in combat but are not going to be placed in command or in second command of a squadron can be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant JG.

Bottom of the totem poll. Either you've just joined or don't currently have any other position than pilot. When you get enough experience and prove yourself to your superiors you can be upped to Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Chief Petty Officer:
The only person dignified enough to hold this rank is (you guessed it) the Chief himself. He is a noncommissioned officer who has been with this AirWing since its inception. He might refer to all of you as "sir" but you better damned well show him the same respect you'd show either the Major, myself, or any of your other superiors. He's definitely earned it.

Any other questions about Colonial military protocol may be directed towards me via personal messaging.

That is all,
Captain James Lupis
Star Wolves Squadron Leader

Star Wolves,

This is Captain Lupis but you can call me either captain or Gulo. It's been a while since we were assembled so I figured I'd check to make sure you're all still breathing. If you've got a green wolf patch on your Viper, check in with me here. If you just got transfered from somebody else, feel free to chime in too. To all those suggestion other ideas for our squadron name, I will make it clear now that we are not changing our mascot. I was given command of this squadron and named it the Star Wolves well aware that our color was green and I have no intention of abandoning our, dare I say, bitching emblem. The prefered Viper in this squadron is the Mk II so brush up in the simulators.

Get to it!

Captain Lupis
