Freespace 2 MODing / texture help and a hello
« on: April 06, 2008, 01:37:35 PM »
Edited model to single mesh + with a simple unwrap.
Search for Texturing tutorials. You will need to figure out where all the uv pieces go. Colour them in to find where they match the model.;9959951;/fileinfo.html

so you can all play whatever test version of SoL you have on that?

perfect. now i dont have to buy a new proccessor.

Depends on what you define as acceptable graphics.
For the level of detail DaBrain uses (highest level) - start with a 256Mb graphic card.
And yes the processor and GPU will make a difference, but we won't know what to recommend till a bit closer to first release.

For some reason Mission designers seem to have lower level systems than the graphics people. :nervous:

If you're not careful, we'll put you in charge of sorting out the SOL web site ;)

Shadows of Lylat / Is there or is there not a demo?

but couldnt we add one of those detail bars inthe optionmenu that regulates graphic detail? you know. the one that was in starsiege tribes?

Yes - the Freespace engine already has that, but the city needed extra work to play nice with machines that are not high end.

Shadows of Lylat / An idea to avoid problems...

The models that were used had already been released. (Starwars thread)

A decentralized network of developers rely more on levels of trust rather than encryption.

All encryption gets broken, usually sooner than projected.

The city is being rebuilt to help non high end machines. It looks like we will have an extra visual package for machines that can handle it.
A 128mb 6600GT won't be enough for this extra package.

Shadows of Lylat / Just a quick question...

So then, it's a game based on a freeware engine?

If you want to be technical then no.
The licensing of the original Freespace 2 engine source code --that Freespace open uses-- does not allow the sale of the engine/game.

So it is free to use, modify and distribute. (thats the engine, I don't know about the FS2 game content)

Freespace Open still retains the Volition copyright notice.

To be a Starfox game would require a license from Nintendo. You should be able to figure the rest.

EDIT: The word free can have two meanings.
Free: no cost
Free: no restrictions on the code.

Bumped to prove a point.

The website hasn't been updated in years! Literally! Look at that date on that post! xD

Really guys, what's going on with the main page? The last time anything happened with it was uploading the trailer in early August, and that was already available on the forums. Do you guys ever plan to do a FAQ or anything? A compilation of your best screenshots?

The people capable of doing a website are too busy to put in the time required and  the effort needed to gather the content hasn't happened either. :blah:

for. dont worry tho i will be @ internet acess for...(thinking here)..... three days approximately. give me a shout on my msn ( dont often check my p.m's on this thing ) (one more thing. these are for ships right?)

Don't worry about time -- just make them good and interesting.
Yes the weapons are for ships, but it's like the cannons on current jets  -- most of it is inside the craft, and out of sight.

These are the Freespace ones to give you some ideas. The model will end up rotating -thats why they are about the same size.

nice work! but i cant help but wonder about that last shot...80 percent of the HUD is gone...

Depends on your screen setup. It's there - but you may not see it. (I didn't see it till I adjusted the levels of the image in gimp) Didn't notice there was a pilot in the previous arwing pic till it was pointed out.

Probably some of the images I create are too bright/light for others. It used to be really noticeable between Mac and PC - (may have changed since then)

As to disabling other controls, why would you need to? If YOU can pull off any kind of maneuver spinning three times per second, you're probably a computer.

Please tell me if this is not clear enough or impossible.

Heh - we want the ship to spin but the pilot view not to spin.
It will only look good in 3rd person view. :)

just give me something to do and i will "Help"  you guys closer to a first mission demo. if you think that i am asking too much pm me or e-mail me @

Well there is one thing you could start with. It's pretty low key but will end up in the game.

For the tech room we need some Venom weapons. If you think you could do some interesting weapon drawings that would help. They will end up being modeled in 3d. You don't need to worry about the modeling part (unless you want to try)

If you are interested I'll post more info. If you haven't got a copy of Freespace, I could also post some pics of standard weapons to give you a starting point.
