Yeah i saw assault force and pointed them at out space_teleport entity which is the genius of ES it switches between space combat and ground combat seamlessly the idea of flying in with a myrmidon jumping out and storming a sivan ship is awesome.

Assault force is looking to follow a similar formula I'm watching that keenly may i ask what turns you away from multi player games if its the annoying people try something wiht a crazy learning curve.

Crossover how do you mean sounds interesting ES its completely on the source engine?

Well we have some good news since my last post a new coder has joined K^2 he speiality is control schemes and AI so we may get some usable AI at some point

The second problem could probably be overcome by the community here i mean you the ship models you have textures experts on the universe and a lot of other resources sounds and stuff.

The next obstical is level design ES requires roughly even battles to work so both teams actually have a chance to win that shouldn't be too hard, though we would need an idea of what ships look like inside but our normal set up of hangar, weapons, shields should work well on FS ships.

Infantry would be tricky i know nothing about the infantry in freespace at all i mean there are ships to analogue all the es ones (using the support ship as a drop ship as well as resupply) the UTF would make decent terrans because they are a similar concept future humans who's earth is lost weapons are human ect and use the NGM af NTF both space rebels using older tech so it works since we never see either on the ground.

I would urge you to try ES its like Free space meets quake brilliant set up if you lack a source game HL2 DM is $5 and it eneables other awesome mods as well

Well there are two obsticals and neither is unwillingness

A single player campaign in the ES universe is somethign we have wanted for a long time the problem is no one on the team knows how to make an AI that can handle infantry and space combat

Recources the models and textures dont exist in source (that's the point of this thread)

If both those things existed making a free space campaign would be no problem what so ever there is already a convention in place for other universes and its encouraged by the devs

sorry I didn't see the reply but yeah its not a case of being unwilling its a case of we have no AI or models and textures to use anyone is welcome to chip in to remedy this and now is a good time as development is being relaunched.

I stole a mattress while drunk last Saturday and haven't slept for 42 hours now

That is perfect thank you very much.

Does anyone know how to get hold of freespace 2 ship models, its for a Freespace 2 themed map X-tr3m3r is making for eternal silence I offered to help him look for models here seem a good place to put a thread up.

The map is for a mod called eternal silence ships in game need to be models and these are hard to come by ones that would be useful are GTVA and NTF ships each side needs

a general purpose fighter
an interceptor
a bomber
a heavy fighter
and a gunship/ dropship the plan is to use the support ship for this as FS2 hasn't really got any good analogous to an ES gunship.

Also of course a capital ship for each side capable of holding all of the above in its hangar current plan is to make an Orion class for the NTF and the hectate for GTVA he has brush based versions of these but more ships could be helpful at some point but this is less urgent.

help his thread is here.,5554.0.html

the final result will look like this but with freespace ships, this is vanila eternal silence.

Mods if i'm in the wrong place I apologise

Edit: Freespace upgrade project has been sugested

1: Going back to eps200's comment. I realize that Eternal Silence is very close to what we want, and it is. However, it's only Multiplayer, and couldn't really deliver any story at all, atleast not as well as single player could. FS-AF is going to have a single player mode, and possibly come with a multi mode also. Thanks for pointing that out though.

2: @BlueLion: Dunno yet.

3: @ Novachen: There was another group of guys that tried to do something similar to this project (we got the idea from them actually :)) and they were using UT04. They got fairly far along, but in the end RL overtook them. I did several weeks of hard research to see which engine would be the best to make this on. After much deliberation, I decided it would be the best on the HL2 engine. The reason being, is that it's very easy to use the map making kit included via a Steam download, and it's very powerful. It's also not to difficult to export any models from Maya 8.0 or (I think) the newest or close to newest version of 3ds Max. And finally, it's very cheap to buy in stores (in North America anyhow.)

I've talked with the other leader of this project, and we both decided that using the HL2 engine would most likely be the best route. The multiplayer is also really good in terms of ping, usually keeping it under 250 for you, even with 64+ players duking it out. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask here, or better yet, just create a new topic at the FS-AF board. :)

that sounds epic ill start following it may i sugest you ask the ES guys about their space_teleport entity its a brush entity that would be handy

Basicly its a two brushes one in the Hangar at full scale the other brush is in space at 1/40 scale when you fly into it you get scaled up or down depending which end you fly into and teleported to the other section. It allows seamless transition between ground and space combat it was this entity that prompted me to bring it up in the first place.
Also if you are going to have shivans what do they look like i've never seen a pic I didn't realise there was one

guys this is close to what your asking for it was inspired by free space (and sins of a solar empire) on source engine space combat infantry combat seamless transition

my favourite game at the moment (got into freespace tio make up for not being able to play ES due to a university firewall

and on a tangent wouldn't be hard to mod that mod into a free space game its a multilayer mod so singleplayer stuff would be hard because no one has codded an ai for in space on the source engine.

the scaling sprites disregard the strange episodes eg the hive is 11km 90% of the time but not always

gate world have hundreds of good writers that are familiar with how do i put it the mechanics of the Stargate ships they also have some awesome modellers (same site i got the scales from) do you want me to go dig out the relevant threads for you to try recruiting in or ill do it if you want to try it but are too busy
its the only place I've seen with shed loads of modellers and nothing els I've had no success getting them into other mod teams but a Stargate mod would have considerably more success.

i would love to help but I am very new to free space only bought freespace 2 three days ago.
I've done stuff for other engines but nothing really transferable ive mapped for FPS and RTS stuff and i have mapped on a source mod that included space combat sections (yp that is doable on that engine) so level design wouldn't be a problem if you have no FREDers ill have ago at it see how much my mapping skills are transferable.

worth noting the 304s windows are out of proportion to everything els on the ship and that in some eps the ship are scaled wrong for dramatic effect.

Not sure if anyone here uses gate world but they members there have done extensive work at scaling the ships here is the thread with all the current work if you read through the thread it shows how they derived the numbers from what's shown on screen.
