General Discussion / Steam=CRAP!
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:05:11 AM »
The only problem I've had with Steam is the backup process, which never seemed to complete properly. Since moving to Windows 7 though it seems to work now so I'm saved from having to download everything again if I have to reinstall Steam or my PC in the future. As a form of DRM it's not caused me any serious problems and I've just accepted some of the limitations it brings but personally it's not disrupted my gaming experience, so I have little reason to be annoyed at having to use it.

I still wonder why developers continue to cash out on Starforce protection and Securom though, which clearly are quiet effective at stopping piracy aren't they?

Can't seem to edit any of my posts here as I was going to delete the thread but I'll no longer be maintaining this thread due to no interest or downloads coming from here. I'll still be running the thread on HLP as I assume those interested are only checking there.

I know what you mean they should be working harder on it

Why do some people always feel the need to say stuff like this?

They are not being paid to do it and you are not paying them to make it for you. Be patient and allow them the time to complete their project properly. I can assure you that you will get a much better experience from it  than from a rushed release just to meet some deadline. :)

Mission 1: Rise of Apollo

Here's my first FS2 mission (outside of BtRL) where Alpha Wing is sent to the outer edges of Vega to investigate reports of Shivan activity. The mission itself is fairly basic and probably not that difficult for the most part. I also have another mission in the works related loosely to this one.

I'll add some screenshots later on.

Here's all my releases bundled into one thread. I'm also running this on Hard-Light productions, hope it's okay to mirror it here as well?

As an introduction I am currently learning how to FRED though I do have some experience from BtRL and other unreleased stuff, therefore expect both coding and mission quality to not always be up to scratch. If you have anything to add on my FREDding or mission design then by all means please do so. I will always welcome positive and negative feedback if it is constructive.

Installation

My missions require the use of it's own mod folder due to usage of custom models and tables, the download for the mod file is here:

Download (9kb) Updated: 03-09-2009

Extract the contents of the above zip file to your FreeSpace2 folder and then in the launcher set the folder vpr as your selected mod.

Current Required Build: SCP 3.6.10 Final + Latest Media VPs

Mission Releases

All missions can be found in there own post in this thread with the links to each mission post listed in the below section. If missions are updated I'll mark it on the list and in the corrosponding post itself.

To install first make sure you've download the latest version of the mod folder. Then extract the mission file to ..\vpr\data\missions\

Polls / FreeSpace 1 or FreeSpace 2?
« on: August 14, 2009, 06:19:40 PM »
I prefer FreeSpace 2 and I only got round to playing FSPort ealier this year but though I'm currently playing through Silent Threat Reborn, overall FS2 is still my favourite of the two.

FreeSpace 2 just seems more interesting to me and it has better capital ships in terms of diversity and weaponary, capital ships just feel more like they should of in FS1. I still enjoyed playing through FS1 though the fact I played it after FS2 is probably the reason why I still favour the latter of the series.

I have to agree though after playing FS1 the Shivans had lost their edge slightly due to stronger GTVA weapons such as the Kayser but in another sense the GTVA had past experience, a better state of military strength and so could bridge the technology gap quicker than in FS1 when the Shivans were a completely new threat.

News / Farewell BTRL
« on: August 13, 2009, 09:59:46 PM »
Fair enough Omniscaper wanted to focus on the final release after the demo and I can respect that but it doesn't take much effort to release some information now and again on something you're working on especially when it has drawn so much attention. This amount of interest in BtRL I found it increasingly odd that it was shunned when I thought it would add some pride to the developers and that they'd take some satisfaction in receiving it.

All I can say now is I hope it will still continue to be developed so that we have two BSG mods to look forward to in the future, both with their own unique content.

Official BSG seasons one and two soundtrack CDs from the series or extract them from the BTRL .vp files (note they are not full versions though). You'll need vpview to do this. Look on freespacemods site in the utility downloads section.

I've bought all the soundtracks and personally it's well worth spending the money for them if you liked the demo music. :)

BTRL will be fully standalone, you don't need any other game to play it.

I guess you're refering to FreeSpace 2, right?

You can buy the game from GoG:

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2

...and then look for the graphical enhancements, DLable from here:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html

...to have the bext gaming experience. Also, unlike what VPR suggested, it's not easy to lose interest without multiplayer. I can't play any multi games but I'm a kind of seasoned FS fan (started in 2003-2004, although I started playing seriously in 2006).

Seriously...

No, he means... Left 4 Dead (did you even read the topic?), a survival horror game by Turtlerock and Valve with a large emphasis on online play.

Oh aren't I an idiot, he's a spam bot.

Sorry but :(

Yes the graphics are up today's standards if your PC can handle it.

You really need to get online for this game though as you'll lose interest in it quickly once you've completed the campaigns in single player mode and I've not touched it since Xmas as I've not spent the time to try it online yet.

There are no dedicated servers yet (this is to possibly be developed by the open source project from what I remember) so you will just have to wait until someone hosts a game.  Your best bet is to try the evenings and weekends as there are usually one or two games being hosted then.

You could set up your own game and hang around to see if anyone else is around to play. BSG Pilots is a good place to try and organise a game.

I disagree.  You get better by fighting equals or near equals.  you get worse by fighting "inferior" pilots.  I remember back when I played a crap ton of quake 2, if I played to many newbies, my skills got dragged down by complacency.  fighting WITH superiors is a goodway to go, if they are constantly explaining thier methods.

Fair enough, I see your point.

I played q2ctf for over 5 years (mainly in lower division teams) and we used to end up against div 1 teams in cup events who were so good that it just got up to the point that we didn't really learn much if anything off them, due to the never ending spawn-die-spawn routine.

I do think though that better players can force you to change to a better method in your gameplay and also make you think harder about where your going wrong.
