@ boomchoob

this is not mandatory, the original idea was that we would try to be a little more organised and make this something other than an arcade shoot-em-up. That kind of went with the idea of having 'organised' squadrons. Up to you if you want to take part, be something more than a score-builder? :)

and yes, I'm quite aware few people are watching this space, as I said myself. But you are! that's a start!

OK

I have plenty of bandwidth now and servers running at my house (yes, yes, don't ask...)

I am going to look at setting one up to serve out BtRL games on a regular basis. Since training is on my desk too it seems sensible.

Now all I need is like a web-based console I can access to create games, and have games that automatically generate. If anyone has any ideas on that I'd love to hear!

OK. First, and most importantly, to all of those who were really looking forward to getting their teeth into some training:

You have my utmost apologies. My family life got turned upside down for reasons I won't bore you with here. It's taken a year or so to get everything back into place and now I have time to dedicate to our wing once again.

OK that said and done:

The CAG has been very gracious in letting me return to my previous role as wing training officer. As before, I'm not looking to cheer people for how good they can shoot sh#t up. This is still about discipline and orderly combat flying.

Since things are a bit quiet round here, the CAG and I will be carrying out some private meets to discuss and develop some real tight training routines. Once that's done I'll be looking for a small number of volunteers to test these routines further. So if you're interested, post here.

Finally, this thread is a training thread, not a discussion of how much fracking killing you did out there. The first sortie you go on in BtRL Demo says it all. Are you that killcrazy nugget who went and got himself killed? If not, apply here!

Watch this space, people...

To all pilots:

Slamscape is now the training No2 for the air wing, so any training questions can also be directed to him.

I am going to be out of the loop for a couple of weeks due to family issues. In my absence Slamscape will be working on the training sessions with input from me.

In the meantime I don't want to discourage the positive feedback with regard to wing training so if anyone wants to run a training session please note:

1. They will not be regarded as part of the official training roster, ie are not part of a course to get your wings, advanced wings, top gun etc.

2. Please plan a specific goal for the mission, even if it's just a dogfight practice eg do "all-on-one" then change the "one" for someone else, so everyone attending knows what's going on and gives the session some purpose.

3. Whoever organises the session will be the marshal for the session. You will be responsible for organising the pilots in-game and telling them what to do. It is your choice as the marshal whether you take part or just fly around monitoring the session, providing instructions etc.

4. The marshal will also be responsible for reporting back on the training thread about how the session went, what good/bad points etc.

Why thank you very much - I shall now endeavour even more to make the training totally Top Gun cool :)

No tower flybys - OR admirals daughters please :biggrin1:

OK that's the harsh version over with.

On the positive side, best of luck everyone, I look forward to handing out a lot of shiny wings!

But remember, the shinier those wings get, the harder you're gonna have to work for them :D

OK Guys

I'm impressed with the kill tallies, but much like they tell the nuggets on BSG, the score isn't everything.

We're talking about working as an integrated unit, not a group of random guns. Random guns cause accidents, random guns get their wingmen shot down because they're more interested in how many stickers they can get along side their cockpits.
We will become an elite fighting force, able to work as parts of the whole.

We are a wing. We are Squadrons. Squadrons work like one body, with precise control not madness. The brain (Sqdrn Leader) either consciously or unconsciously controls his squadron during a fight. The other parts of that body either respond to signals, or instinctively know what to do. This puts the Squadron CO's in control. That in turn puts the CAG (or mission leader) in control. Then, when everything goes wrong and someone's in trouble, no-one comes home thinking "damn we could have saved them if we'd only been following orders, patrolling where the boss told us to, rather than chasing another kill".

THAT, ladies (are there any? hope so) and gentlemen is what we are trying to achieve.

I'm spending this weekend starting on formulating the first training sessions, so don't expect anything to get posted esp regarding a training session calendar until mid next week. Some of you are probably going to find some of early bits boring (formation flying etc), but the drill and repetition is the best way to learn. We'll get to the good stuff when we've all mastered the basics.

I'm looking at channel-switching plugins for TS (or ventrilo - I have a ventrilo server of my own on my webhosting server) so squadron leaders can talk to their pilots then switch channels to talk to the CAG and other COs on a separate channel - but hopefully hear both...

Found some links on web, investigating...

58th Viper Air wing: The White Knights / 2nd training sortie

I have to agree, that was a fantastically better training mission, and yes very much because of the centralised leadership and control of the session.

Soldier raised all the good points regarding comms. I agree about multiple channels but since we can't then never mind. Otherwise, I think it's up to people to use more strict radio behaviour. This includes responding to the flight leader's request - eg when the CAG said 'all fighters engage green2' we all reply in the affirmative with our callsign or flight number.

I have to say once again I have a crap excuse for underperforming last night - got really bad flu. I'd like to think well of myself for turning up anyway - I'm glad I did.

As to us all being on the same page in the flight manual - it's a good point Soldier and the CAG has already enslaved me to that destiny ;) - and one I take gladly. Watch this space...!

Thanks for the vote of confidence all.

Soon, once I've had a chance to go through some of the training material I have and prepare it. I want to have a simple start so we can all have a good ground point, but not spoon feed you all - most of us have flown plenty of sims and know how to fly. Bear with me people.

To all pilots

The CAG has been kind enough to assign me the great privilege of acting as Wing Training Officer.

To all you nuggets who can't handle big words, that means you've gotta get through me to get your wings! ;)

Seriously. I will now be organising the training sessions on behalf of the wing. I will be setting some specific goals based around formation flying then moving on to fighting tactics and manouevers. I want to make us the tightest, best looking ships out there and that means some discipline, and us all singing from the same page. Then, when everything goes crazy in the vacuum of space, your training will kick in like instinct and we'll shine on through.

I'll ask you all to bear with me on details while I get this all devised and set out. I'll then be posting openings for training sessions. I don't want to overblow you all with intricate flight details, but both the CAG and I agree that we want to treat this seriously, and hope you do too. Some of it might start off a little boring for you experienced types, but we've gotta get everyone up to the same level.

And yes, you'll be elligible to add wings of varying prettiness to your signature as you progress :)

Pay attention nuggets!

As of 28th April:

Ensign Jayne 'Fishbait' Tyrum has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with immediate effect.

He will be taking over as Orange Squadron XO and assigned the callsign Orange 2.

Congratulations Fishbait

fair point - wasn't suggesting that we should use RAF - just using as an example.
