Title: My first lovely model
Post by: Rodo on August 11, 2009, 09:29:49 PM
Here's an update on the early model I have been making so far, I've started the UV texture process... didn't thought it was gonna be so hard

Very wip, but I like it wip wip

A very good start, but I'd use bigger variety of textures. Orion and Arcadia ones mixed together: Awesomness. :pimp:

yeah, that's the idea, I just finished adding seams to the base model so I could UV it all in one piece, and that is just a test texture, from now on I'm adding a couple of details such as the windows and some aditional stuff... though I think this is what will take more time.

What is this thing going to be? A carrier I suppose.

a support ship for now... I'll be making a more detailed model in the future with this very same mesh, that one will be a carrier, but first I wan't to finish this one so I can learn the basics.

Learning how UV map is already an achievement... I wish I could be able to do it....

Nice work on the model, Rodo. Is it going to be in-game anytime soon? :)

I used to be able to UV map to some extent or another.....i wouldnt remember now if you asked me though. definitely the most painstaking part of the process though, thats for sure.

not sure, I have a volt of incoming exams next week so I'm kinda a little here.. a little there, you know.

I still have to finish adding the details to the UV, then making the turrets.. so I would say not that close to release yet :S

How about POFing and tabling?

that's on stage 0'

I'll do it once I get the model fully done, meaning uv finished, then turreting, then exporting to pof, then tabling and then test.. I think that's the way to go.. not quite sure since it's my first model.

It's a... block. It's bland, and boring... I would suggest trying to make the shape much less boring.

yeah, it's completely blocky I know :P ... I find it hard to make curved faces on blender... hell! how you do that? Do I need to use that sculpt mode or something?

Make the general shape better, then detail it.

For roundings, you just... Make a circular shape with your vertices. And set it smooth.

It's faster to draw what you want to do first and then start modeling it. In my case, the final result has almost nothing to do with the drawings, but it's still a faster method.

draw?? you mean in paper... and then using it as a guide when modeling?

Yeah, that's probably what he means.

I'm not a modeller, but I think texturing the first model and getting it in-game it's already an achievement. You may make the mesh more complex, of course, but it's not 100% necessary. :)

I'll finish this one and then I'll move to make a carrier with the same base model (before uvmaping), just a couple more details to add on this one anyway.

Don't forget to test you model in game occasionally.

Make sure it loads, and then blows up with no crashing... :)

Also make sure collision detection is fine.

Yes, but to get as closer as possible to the 3d idea you'll need drawings of the top, side, front, back and bottom.
In the paper it's faster to decide what you're going for.
