Not many of those will be used for the preview campaign, Freelancer.  When we need original cast voices, their voices will certainly be used!

(isn't it too early to do voice casting?  *and my favorite so far* this line doesn't sound right *people obviously can't read that these lines are for audition only, and not in the campaign.  oh well*)  J/K dude, I'm handling it...so far;-)

3 years in art school and I've learned that the best way to respond to criticism is to take it with a grain of salt and put it in the backburner or your mind. Some negative criticism I've received became a source of much learning that furthered my development.

Some criticism I received I took to heart and to them responded with a "Fuck you very much". I then proceeded to find out where they lived and threw a lunch bag filled with my neighbor's dog's feces at their front door.

In the end I never take it personally. ::follows neighbor's dog for more ammo::

I wasn't slamming you. I've made the mistake of getting voice acting together too quickly and learnt from it. If you think you know the pitfalls and can avoid them then good luck to you.

Dukeman,

I'm really sorry I haven't managed to get my audition mp3/ogg files over to you yet. I hope there is still space on the mod for my contributions; I've got kind of a weird setup compared to most ppl here. I will try to record them tonight. Thanks for your patience.

Hi there 1st post :). First of all, i'd like to congratulate the effort of this community, as far as i can see this mod is becoming supperb !!! Keep up the good work guys

I'll try to make my contribution. But first a question.
On the series, the voices over the comunicators have a weird effect, like the voice is modulated. Do we need to add that effect to the mp3 file ?

MAIA

Welcome!  Glad you're here!

To answer your question, NO...all effects will be added in post-recording editing...I'm working on some filter settings now.  All vocal submissions must be recorded in the clear, normal voice (no fake accents), and with a minimum of background noise

And yes, we ARE planning on using the distortion:-D

I got directed to this whole forum by a blog who mentioned your awesome looking Freespace mod. I'm a girl and I'd love to help out with the voice acting. I'll record the lines and send them in to you as soon as possible (if it's not too late).

I'm Norwegian, though.. so I may have a slight accent.. just so you know.. if I sound a bit weird, at least it's not a fake accent! xD;;

Ok I would love to try out for the voice thing, but before I send in the recordings I would like to know a little background info on the characters, ex: age (helps me get into the mindframe of the character).  Although, im only 17 so im not sure if you would consider me to young for the parts.  But I was in a couple school plays if that counts for anything :nervous:
And on a side note, I did try to ask some of my friends that are girls to try but the result was less than acceptable. :hoppingma   Note: I have been wandering around these boards for a while now
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: Dukeman42 on December 04, 2005, 10:45:15 PM
Unfortunately, in order to maintain security regarding the storyline, I'm not able to divulge much regarding the characters.  That being said, there are several parts of several different ages, backgrounds, and personalities.  My desire is to hear you naturally, how YOU would say the given lines.  This helps me best discern what character, if any, you would be most suited for.  A character depends as much on the actor's personality as the actor does on the character's lines.

My best advice: hit me with your best shot, as YOU would say the lines given their context and syntax (the context is ambiguous for a reason...to give YOU as the actor to inject some personality and creativity into it.)

Welcome to the boards, and I hope you will stick around!  Perhaps you'll be part of the project...I'll try to find a place for everyone I can:-)

Ok, I'll speak them naturally and as the lines indicated.  I would love to be part of the project.  Now to dig out the mic........

By chance could you be able to throw a few more lines my way, or do I  have to come up with them on my own..... dun dun daa

accents are fine with me:-D  The colonies were certainly very diverse, despite the prominant "American" accent throughout the series so far.  I would like to try to bring out that diversity in the characters we are developing here.

Regarding the effect on the intership communications in BSG, I've got that effect down-pat... I was working on a short scifi film recently that called for an intercom effect and I modelled it off the BSG style sound. Incidentally the effect used in BSG is very similar to the effect used during the attack run at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope.

If someone wants to send me a clean example of a piece of in-game dialogue I can apply the effect and you guys can see what you think

That would be giving away my trade secrets ;) - but i'll tell you that it's more than can be done with distortion and filtering... you need a couple of other tricks too.

There are a lot of free effects plugins out there that can be loaded into any compatible VST host, check em out ;)

Not too late!!!

about TWO OR THREE DAYS, then I'll be sending out call-backs.

Of course, that's for the preview campaign...there have been no decisions/deadlines made on voice casting for the 'main' campaign.

Thanks!

Well, did you, punk? :biggrin1:

I did those files in Goldwave with a crappy Skype headset through an onboard sound chip at work. A quick audition reel so to speak, nothing fancy.

I hope I won't be selected, because that would mean there are far better candidates that applied and we all just want the best for the game. If you need random chatter I'd be still available though. I want this mod to succeed. :)

Anyway, I got myself a new quality headset with a mike with noise reduction filter, just in case.

I'm not a sound engineer, so I only know how to tinker with Goldwave to clean up my recordings. Just because I know how to use a word processor doesn't make me a Pulitzer prize writer. :)

If I weren't busy on another project with 3D modelling and texturing I'd help out there too, but that will have to wait until I'm done.

Sorry Sting, Strike; I'd replied to mst people when I received them...unfortunately, a couple fell through the cracks of my busy life;-)  I DID receive auditions from both of you.

As far as when callbacks will occur, that is still on the way...not as soon as I'd hoped; there is much that must occur BEFORE we can lock in the characters.  The story is still in the works, and I am hesitant to lock in voice actors before the story is finished and I know WHO the characters are.  Besides, would you rather wait now, and be able to get right to work as soon as you are selected, or be selected now and then have to wait for however many months until we are ready to record, and run the risk of your part being cut since the story is still being tooled;-)

Keep the faith; it WILL happen!

I thought on the previous page you said something about two or three days.  Now its "many months"?  :shaking:   Oh well.  Personally I prefer a more complete program than to have one created on the fly and still be somewhat incomplete.  I know that making decisions before the proper time can cause chaos and inconsistancy.  I know you'll do whats right Duke.  I just wish it wasnt "months" now. :p

It's not as easy as it seems. It's a bit like making a movie. You can't go and hire actors when the script isn't even finished yet. But when you audition you can help them decide where to take the story. If you have Tom Hanks (Apollo 13) auditionning for a part you will have other possibilities than if Jack Nicholson (The Shining, As Good As It Gets) is auditionning. While Jack could pass as an astronaut, he doesn't quite fit the part. :biggrin1:

The way I see it, they are already hard at work on getting all the main assets (3D models, textures, source code, FRED editor, sound effects, etc.) going and the next phase is the making of a campaign, that's where we come in. But first they need to nail down the story and freeze it at one point so as to be able to finish it in a reasonable amount of time and effort. It's too easy to start off something huge and in the end all you have is a train wreck. Once the campaign is focussed and the design frozen (at which point everything is set and nothing will be majorly changed or added), they can come and pick the people that fit best for the roles. Just like in the movies, they'll probably need "extras," that's where those of us who didn't make it as main cast, will get a chance to contribute our own sound bites.

By the way, a few months are nothing in a project of this magnitude, and to be quite frank, I'm very impressed about how far they've come in this short amount of time.

That's what I'm all excited about.

My apologies, Sulda, for that misstatement a few posts earlier.  I really DID want to get callbacks out in that time, but the final turns of the story have undergone some retooling, so I've had to back up a bit and rework a bit...not a LOT, but a bit.  Regardless, this has altered the schedule; and the sudden jump in modelling/texturing activities may have set the schedule further back, but I am very excited that this project is getting even BETTER than I hoped it would.

I beg your patience in this process.  We will be needing many of your services in the near future, and I hope you will remain motivated and interested in being involved!!
Thank you for your enthusiasm (especially you, Sulda!) and understanding (especially you, Stingray!)

Believe me Stingray, I understand fully.  I've written short novels since I was in junior high.  I have one that I am working on now, which I began in 2003.  Sometime in late 2006 I will begin work on my first short film.  Even this early in the film process I am challenged... before the process has even begun in earnest.

Oh, I completely understand how long and arduous it can be to unfold a quality story.  I mearly got my hopes up. :)

Duke - You certainly do not owe anyone an appology.  As I previously stated, I have full confidence in your ability to oversee the story concept and the timeframe is natrually at your discression.  I didn't mean to give an impression of impatience.  I would be honored to assist you in any way possible with your story, should you desire it.  I believe I have many skill sets to bring to the table, unfortunately, coding and programming elude me.  I will await your reply with trepidation.

Well, we're still shopping for a sound editor (I"ll do it if it comes to that, however I'd rather have someone more talented in that department...I've only just begun to toy with it), and the story (for the preview, anyway), is just about done.

I'd say a month, with out interupptions, but this is the Real World...so, maybe a couple months, but HOPE within a month.

Omni,

Have you guys had no luck scrounging up talent with the HLP guys?  I know the Babylon Project and WCSaga has some talented folks modeling/texturing.

Or is it an unspoken rule; never work on too many mods at once?

Just curious.

HLP and GW are both well aware of what the other is up to. If there were people who wanted to join up they probably would have already.

Remember that the more time you spend working for one project, the less time you spend on another so we'd rather recruit from outside the FS community.

In that way we don't hurt the other projects and we increase the overall number of people in the community with the skills needed to make a campaign.

Four months, Elukka? Prison? You're a conscious objector or what?

Anyways, I'd like to apologise for flipping out (something Starbuck would never do). As for me, this thread stays clean from OT from hereon. As the Finglishm goes: let's see what the general discussion forum has eaten.

Carry on.

Back to topic: one of my very dear friends pointed out that a combat pilot would hardly call "mayday" when engaged defensive. I have to agree. Back when I was still active in WarBirds, the usual panic yell to a fellow fighter pilot was "666".

But if that line 2 is supposed to be a civilian ship, for example after being ambushed, it would figure. So how is it?

I'm actually all 3. In that order as well. First army, then civil service, then objector :D hahah

Dropped out of army because my CO's were giving orders they did not follow themselfs. Plus they were walking around the base in their military uniforms talking to each other and in a loud voice in public called one of the female recruits a whore, several times. The female recruit not being there, as that was very rude and non-military behavior and noone even bothered to report it i had enough of the army at that point. There is something about they caling a woman under their command a whore behind her back that sort of snapped it for me.

And i was in civil service for 3 months until the dude in charge of the facility where i was gave me 3 years of postponement on my service against my wishes, i took the matter to court and i won yet it took them 2 months even to send me a letter informing what they will do next. Since the court only said that the decicion will be reviewed by the facility. In the letter they sent me the date i would be allowed back into the job was 3 months from then. And in my original contract when i signed up it was clearly stated that my civil service would end on 040406 and as the court has figured out that it wasnt my mistake, it was with the civil service place that postponed my service i dont see myself as having any obligations to work beyond the date that was originally set. And even if i do happen to win this case it will be after i have already been sent to prison for 4 months.

( i know, i know, no OT. i'm done now) :D

So anyway, i 'll record these thingies and send it

But if you can't find a solution, sure, send it in .wav...please try WMP first, though:-)

no problem, no problem. its a problem with hotmail not with you =). But on that note, i sent it a few mins back, do lemmeeknow if it hasnt arrived in a hour or so and then i can scream and unleash my wrath at hotmail and just hack into your ceiling lamp and make it send the data in binary with lightflashes....

Sorry its 2:30 am here :D

Edit:Yarrr, that be mighty good mate. Ye landlubbers spill yer guts and tell me if ye be needing a space pirate :D

Also on that note, I do appreciate feedback and information on possible levels of frakkyness. Tho, my mic is fairly bad as it has too much insulation around the head so it records everything in low voice *sniffs* So you might want to make a few of them louder and such :) but i trust you know that is what one should do if one gets a quiet clip ^_^;

Sorry again, its 2:30 am and the humor is getting strange :D

Post by: Joona on February 22, 2006, 09:30:37 AM
Hum. Looks like folks are interested in feedback and constructive criticism, Would it be a bad idea to form a "rating" thread like BlackSheep did on IFH forums?

There's a joke about Finnish mentality which goes a bit like this:

A Finn, Swede, and Norwegian were in Africa and saw an elephant for the first time. This is what they thought...

Swede: "That critter has some frakin' BIG ears!"
Norwegian: "That critter has a frakin' LONG trunk!"
Finn: "I wonder what that critter thinks of me..."

See the point?

Nice to see more Finns coming to the Forum,My parents are from Finland,They took me there when I was a kid and I remember all the girls with blonde hair and blue eyes ,is it still like that there? My dad had dark brown hair so I'm guessing there are mixed colors there too.

-Oops ,a little off topic, sorry bout that.

Post by: Joona on February 22, 2006, 01:09:15 PM
Arrgh. Promised not to OT, but I cannot leave a direct question unanswered.

Although many girls (and) boys are blondes, a lot of them aren't. Finns are a mixture of the original Fenno-Ugric (allegedly loosely related to native Americans) and Germanic / Scandinavian. I have dark brown hair and brown eyes (guess I gotta upload my avatar), whereas my daughter is platinum blonde with green eyes.

Nuff offtopic. If anyone's interested in Finland trivia, feel free to aim your browsers here: http://virtual.finland.fi/

Sorry, Duke. Due to personal circumstances I've been so tired after work that haven't got the energy. And as you may have noticed the weekend went straight to Hell in a handbasket. I'll try my best to put up a decent performance this evening (now being 16 hundred hours local at work and I'm outta here).

But I have done my best to recruit some friends who I know are fluent in English (or American - snicker) and are diehard BSG fans. Soon you'll have an all-Finnish squadron

I figured since this was audio related i would post here.  It seems that getting original BSG musical material isn't a sure thing(In a legal sort of way).  The Twelve Colonies seem like they were pretty diverse and they probably had a variety of music(Kara had some nice piano music back at her pad).  So just as filler for the heart pounding drum beats you could probaby add traditional music from different  locals, Asia/Paciffic Rim, Africa, MiddleEast ect. might add a little variety and still seem cannon.  With luck BSG music can be secrured but if not this may provide a solution.

Thanks to Joona for pointing this audition out.

Dukeman42, I just sent my audition samples. I hope you got 'em and liked 'em. I'm having an annoying flu at the moment so the voice isn't as good as I intended. Got to take some medicine and get my voice in its normal state.

StarSlayer, I got both BSG soundtracks (mini-series & Season 1) in case you are in need of BSG music. Though I suspect that you already got both of these albums. :)

A viper with a von Rosen cross? Now THAT would be controversial.

I kinda hoped they'd really reinstate the 1918-1944 Finnish Air Force insignia for the Hornets. Why do we have to suffer shame because some lunatic dictator has used a similar symbol? Like we were guilty of his misgivings or something.

Sucks.

Also,I noticed he has 2 different looking flags one also has a cool yellow and red coat of arms in the middle of it,Why is there 2 styles?

Would you need some "light" french accented voices too?

I'm from Montreal, Quebec. I'm fully bilingual and you can just barely tell I have a french accent. In fact most people don't hear it except on "some" words... or if I had too much *cough* booze.

Just send me an email if you're interested.

I thought about it when I remembered Cmmdre. James 'Paladin' Taggart from the Wing Commander 1999 movie, played by Tchéky Karyo... My accent is not as visible as his, but I could make it like that.

Cheers!

Duke out of curiosity will you guys be implementing "Yavin IV" comm effects?
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: Dukeman42 on February 24, 2006, 03:34:29 AM
Well, we are working on 'mini-series' comm effects...i.e., short wave radio-type distortion, as was heard in the mini-series...To what degree is yet to be decided; you may have noticed that the harshness of that particular filter has been slowly toned back, especially as more action was happening in the cockpit during the regular season...not too sure if we'll go for the in-you-face distortion of the mini-series, or the more toned back distortion of the seasons.

Rest assured, as we endeavor to ensure authenticity in modelling, effects, and level design, that same spirit is in full force in sound editing and other areas often considered 'secondary.'  Nothing is being overlooked.

Post by: holydave on February 27, 2006, 12:04:30 PM
Hello, my first post, be nice.:nervous:

I'm from the UK, and can do an OK American accent, but I can do rather good British R.P. (BBC accent), Post/Aristocratic, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Scouse (Liverpool, centre of the Universe), Cockney (well, mockney), West country, Lancashire (my native accent), Yorkshire (How do, Ilkley Moor bar T'at etc.) and Geordie (Newcastle). I can't do a Birmingham accent for some reason, but hey, they're weird there anyway.

What I mean to say is, will british accents be welcome in a game based on an American mini-series?

Cheers,
DAVE

I want natural voices...I want to hear you the way God/Allah/The Great Maker/Your Mother made you.  Because that's the voice you are likely most comfortable and familiar with.

You may submit up to two takes of each line, though I'd prefer you did not.

One small question came in to my mind: Are you planning to use MP3Gain or similiar program to make voice MP3's volume equal?:confused1

I hate that in some mods voice acting pumps the volume from whisper to scream, iex. somebody is screaming for medic and it's so faint that you can barely hear it and in stealth mission one teammates whispering sounds like screaming to compared to anothers.

...that will be up to the sound editor, when one is chosen...rest assured, the dialogue will receive the same TLC as the models, effects, story, and gameplay; if the voice acting is not believable or in context, there goes the story, and soon after, the experience!!

Hey Duke, I was just wondering if it were ok if I were to send a 2nd audition.

I believe my first audition didn't have enough emotion for each of the lines, and it's most probable that I can do better than what I've sent you.

Is it alright?

I think my best was the "what the frak were you thinking" line... but I would have liked to have had a briefing commander one.  Let me jumble some military lingo around and I am GOD. ;)

Now that I think of it, I don't think Duke ever confirmed that he received my recordings.

Not really sure where to put this and I didn't want to start a new thread for it, but have you guys played with the idea of giving the player a call sign, other than the fact that it would be cool it would make the other AI pilots far more believable if they could call you out by name, plus you could get it like hotdog did in the series or something like that...

Hello everybody !
I'm a french cyber-pilot flying on FS and XWing series since 1998.
I must admit I was blown away by this idea of this BSG mod, 'cause I find these new episods transcendental !

I'm quite busy at the moment (leading xwa wings, taking part to starwars animations, studying and acting as a comedian sometimes), but I'd be honored to help you making some audio files, or writing some french translation.
I can take a very good english or american accent, with different kind of voices and intentions (comedians learn to, you know...:P).

I'm just wondering what you're going to do with specific speeches for campaign missions...Will you ask for other auditions ?

It seems that I'm a bit late (298replies in this only thread :eek2: ), but a question is never charged ^^

I'll try to keep myself up to date, and good luck !

MàJ : Preparing audio files at the moment. Expect to receive them during this Week End. I book my place :)

When it comes to callsigns you have two choices.

1) Give the player a character and a callsign which he will be forced to play.
2) Allow the player to pick his own callsign and play as whoever they wish to play.

The latter sounds like the better choice until you realise that if you do things that way the script must either not use the callsign anywhere outside of on screen names or it will break the voice acting.
However giving the player a callsign also has a downside. It forces the player to role play a certain character instead of being able to play as whoever they wish to play as.

So now you know the good and bad points of both sides I'm not going to tell you which one we picked. :p
I did answer your question though. We have certainly thought about whether to do it or not :)

How about going the military route that you have a mission specific designator.  If you watch Top Gun Maverick's tomcat is Ghost Rider 122 or somthing.  That might be a better choice then the ubiqoutous ALPHA 1 DESTROYER OF ALL SHIVANS!

As you have picked already I shall not try to sway you...

other than to say being given a call sign works in tune with the series becouse pilots are given call signs by thier flight leaders (as in the case of hotdog) and your right it does force you to play certain way, but Im guessing this will be a fairly linaer game anyway due to how freespace is set up.

but Im sure whatever choice you made it was the right one... I am after all no games designer (yet)

Don't make assumptions about how linear the game will be. :)  The current plotline is fairly linear at the moment but it's a dangerous assumption to presume it will stay that way as both Axem and I are well aware of how to use persistent variables and other features that can make gameplay much more non-linear :cool1:

Even using retail you could make very non-linear campaigns if you were willing to provide all the extra missions.

Regarding the use of Callsigns, it should be possible to have $callsign used in in-game messages to display the player's callsign, but it means that it can't be done if you're using voicefiles.  It might be more useful for non-BRTL-team campaigns or multiplayer.

I'd prefer you just sent the requested lines...it'll be enough to give us a basic idea; Callbacks is when we take a few more samples to help us decide which voices would be best with which characters.

No need to apologise. I was upset at anything you said. As I said at the moment the plotline is fairly linear so your guess isn't that far off at the moment. :)

I was simply saying that there is no inherent reason why it has to be that way. It only requires that the FREDders work on a few more missions. That is a fair bit of extra work but its certainly possible :)

Yep. That's pretty much what I said less eloquently earlier :) I'm using it heavily in SoR since I know that it won't be voiced. Never thought much of using it in multiplayer though.

Hey All

Just as an aside regarding callsigns, pilot callsigns and mission callsigns are entirely seperate from each other.  I've had mission callsigns ranging from Allied Force (Alf), Canadian Forces (CanForce), Implementation Force Chalk number 11 (IFOR 11), to Alpha 11.  While at the same time I've refuelled several pilots who operated under NATO callsigns (Alpha xx, Bravo xx, Charlie xx, etc) but were never addressed by their personal callsign.

Part of the question becomes whether or not you stick to a rigid 'military' format.  Of course the best part with BSG is that you can adapt and make your own format.

Not to be long winded just my 2 cents.

Cheers

Well, BSG tends to use nickname callsigns most of the time, or position callsigns ('CAG', 'Atlantia Actual')
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: Dragoniz3r on May 04, 2006, 03:29:21 PM
Would be nice to be able to use pilot callsigns, as they're a hell of a lot less boring than position callsigns. Perhaps the player should be stuck with a fixed callsign for the campaign (or perhaps a choice among a list of callsigns), and only be allowed to choose an arbitrary one in multiplayer.

Ya, NATO callsigns are rather boring, as can be mission callsigns.  One thing I had forgotten earlier is also using squadron callsigns, on my last squadron we were Oiler or Rebel, much more exciting and fun that alpha or delta.

What I like best about the BSG r/t proc's is that they at least made the effort to accurately mimic actual military procedures, but still kept the fun/interesting bits.  Using positional and pilots callsigns makes it more personal and easier to identify various elements from episode to episode.

Cheers.

Possible but would require a hell of a lot of FREDding and vastly increase the number of voice acting files we would need in the final product. Basically we would need a copy of any line that used the callsign for each possible callsign. Then we would need duplicate events which differed only by the chosen callsign in order to pick the correct one.

Basically it's a lot of trouble for a minor effect. Not really worth it. It's not that I don't mind going through large amounts of trouble, it's just that the outcome needs to be something a bit more noticable than this would be.

With some recoding of the freespace engine, voice lines could be composed of something like:

$sound23 $callsign $sound24

Where sound23 is "Hey," and sound24 is "I could use a hand over here". This way you'd only have to record the callsigns and the lines once, but the engine would have to be able to queue sounds up to be played sequentially. So you just queue the sounds up and everything just works.
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: karajorma on May 04, 2006, 10:20:59 PM
Thing is that tends to sound very false as the emphasis put into the rest of the sentence will be missed in the callsign.

Never having touched the message code I've got no idea how much coding would be required but it could easily spiral into a fairly large amount. As far as I've seen so far when playing with the builtin-messages code FS2 can only deal with one message at a time so changes would need to be made to make sure that the three messages were all delivered in the correct sequence as well as not being interrupted by a message from another source (happens more often than you'd expect!).
FRED alterations would also be needed too to handle it.
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!

I still think that you shouldn't be able to chose a callsign, at first your be called rookie then you can get a call sign given to you. I don't think that this would effect the player at all, in fact I think it would make it more real. I mean you didn't chose your name, your parents did, yet that doesn't make you name any less you.

I think pilots get to choose their own callsigns for the most part. It wouldn't make sense to just call the new guys "rookie" until you thought of something better. You might have two "rookies" in the air at one time. Begging for catastrophe.

In the real world, you certainly do not choose your own callsign.  A friend of mine completed flight training in the Marines a year or two ago, and his callsign was based on something that he did during training.  I had also heard, prior to his entering the Marines, that pilots never choose their own callsign.

I've only seen them called 'rookie' in the movies.  But you could do like Flight of the Intruder..."FNG#1, FNG#2, we ran out of the good names."  However, real world being what it is, I think it would probably be alot easier for the pilot in a game to make his own.

I tried to post this earlier, but Game Warden stalled and wouldn't load the page for me, then when I tried to reload it, it told me that too much time had elapsed and I'd been signed out, so I lost the post.

Anyway, I was going to say that we've already seen in BSG, both in "Acts of Contrition" and "Scar", that new recruits are assigned their callsigns.  In "Acts of Contrition", Starbuck gives "Cat", "Hot-Dog", and "Chuckles" their callsigns, and I recall "BB" from "Scar".  So having the player assigned a callsign (at least for the primary campaign) would work the best to support scripted messages using the player's callsign.  Perhaps, the player could start out only being refurred to by wing position, but during a training mission, the player participates in some scripted event, which precipitates the nickname/callsign, which is then officially given to him/her during the debriefing.  You may also want to re-do the meadals system for BTRL, so that the first medal you get is your "wings", as seen in "You Can't Go Home Again".

It has occurred to me that games get done a lot faster when you focus on the major features, throw in the minor ones when you have spare time, and don't spend tons of time making sure you get every little thing right. By this I mean that we should probably just have an assigned callsign, at least for the teaser campaign. This will keep development time down. Then while everyone is salivating over the teaser, you can try to throw in variable callsigns for the full campaign.
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: karajorma on May 05, 2006, 04:10:47 PM
Variable callsigns and other little minor things are the sort of thing that would be added by a FREDder. Now I can't speak for Axem (the team's other FREDder) but I have have a weird sickness whereby the harder a mission is to make the more interested I get in FREDding it. :)

So feel free to throw out little ideas for minor things. I can't promise I'll put them in but if I like the idea I will almost certainly attempt to FRED it. And the more interested I am in making a mission the faster it will get developed :)
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: Dragoniz3r on May 05, 2006, 04:26:26 PM
Well, in this case there's more involved in variable callsigns than just FRED, methinks. As was mentioned previously, you'd have to have some way to make sure the sounds were played consecutively, rather than being interrupted by something else, and that sounds like an engine function to me.
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: karajorma on May 05, 2006, 04:36:04 PM
You could do it by having more than one copy of the message like I said earlier than that :)

I doubt that this is going to be something that ends up in any release of the campaign. Too much work for too little gain. But things like this don't slow down development so I've got no problem with people requesting them. :)

Post by: Dukeman42 on May 05, 2006, 06:14:32 PM
You won't be seeing the player with a variable callsign...not in the campaign, at any rate.

Other NPC 'variable' callsigns...now that is something I've been thinking about for sometime, and have not yet gotten to talking to the fredders about yet...priorities.

In the BSG universe as well, callsigns are definately assigned by your squadron-mates. Col. Tigh's "How did you get that name? Starbuck? Buck, buck-buck-buck." And Six's comment on Lt. Valerii, "Do you know why they call her boomer?" Callsigns are bsaically nicknames your squadron gives you based on something you did, how hard it is to pronounce your real name, or just plan chance.
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: Dragoniz3r on May 05, 2006, 10:55:21 PM
We've already determined that they are indeed assigned, however, for the purposes of this game, it would certainly be the Right Thing to allow the player to choose a callsign, at least for multiplay.
Title: CASTING CALL!! ALL VOICE ACTORS!!
Post by: Admiral Ace on May 06, 2006, 02:07:59 PM
Restraining callsigns to multiplayer would be a good idea, 'cause recorded voices have less impact during them. But in solo campaigns, you certainly have noticed that voices in a mission greatly increase immersion and action.

Anyway, my samples have been sent on the Dukeman42 email.

Then... use different voice files for multiplayer than you use for singleplayer? That's what's done in most games, anyway. In X-Wing Alliance multiplay or skirmish play, pilots are always referred to by their squadron position, like, "Four, you've got one on you!" "One, coming to assist." Perhaps something similar could be done here.

That's easy enough to do but the point is that it will always sound like a fudge. Especially when you have pilots screaming warnings at each other.

You pretty much have to do it that way in multi if you want to have voice acting but if it can be avoided in singleplayer by giving everyone static callsigns then it's probably a better idea :)

Dude, I AM stimmed to the max. Been burning pure ethanol for the whole weekend. I am literally running on fumes. My bro served me some Cuban cigars and rum yesterday. Arr, we pirates, matey! Hoist the sails and make ready, boys. And I ALSO managed to crash my ride worse than that chick on stims (been drunk AFTER that, mind you). Guess who doesn't have insurance?  Oh well, a few thousand Euros here or there. Who cares? Wheeeeee!

No... not really? You too (I rewiewed the game, BTW, so I have more bragging rights)? As I wrote in the rewiev, I cried like a baby when the EMPEROR made his intro animation speech. Yuo rebel scum! You will SUFFER until PEACE and ORDER is restored to the galaxy.

BTW, I don't know your nationality. But if you ain't a Finn, you might find it amusing that the most common translation in TV and Videos of ROTJ has "rebel scum" translated as "senkin paska". Literally "you little shit". Which is a bit stronger expression than Mr. Lucas intended, I guess.

But hey, the best is yet to come. Remember the stormtroopers discussing in ANH as Ben is sabotaging the tractor beam? They wonder about the fuss around the station, and this one guy says: "dunno, maybe it's a drill".

It just happens that in English "drill" means both a military excercise as well as the thing you use to make holes with. Sorry to say, in Finnish it means ONLY the latter. Thus, "ehkä se on pora" sounded like "oh well, maybe somone's just drilling (his wall on a hammer setting)".

Ouch. Sorree. Jokes are never funny if you gotta explain them with more than 2 words. Sue me.

But back to topic of being utterly drunk and nuts. The best run I had in WarBirds was when I had stayed awake for 48 hours, working all the time, and was so drunk a breathalyzer would have ran screaming for his mommy. This is getting scary.

I simply can NOT compute if I ain't either drunk or drugged. If you know what I mean....

Heh I applied! Actually I think I sent it twice, sorry... if any tech jargon is needed I can make stuff up that sounds good, (flux capacitors, flow valves, and, ion regulators... not to mention ftl coolant regulators, thrust flow control, and imd subsystems!)

Hey, long overdue. Anyway, can anyone direct me to some software kit to decently record for this purpose? (free preferibly) Thanks in advance.

P.S I might be able to get my mum and sister to do something, but my mum is hyper - lol.

If you don't like soundrecorder32 (windows), you can do to downloads.com and get Goldwave. (you can DL a mp3 plugin for it to make mp3's). It can also save to .ogg format (what Derelict had us use, if I remember right).

That's what I mainly use.

Audacity works great... and here is a tip from a pro friend of mine... If you dont have a pro mic, just take pantyhose and wrap them real tight on your 12 dollar mic from radioshack, they work wonders for cutting out noise and wind distortion!

And if you don't have a mic, you can always plug your headphones into the audio-input and speak into them. It actually works.

Google for Audacity and download and use it. It's very simple freeware audioprogram, for recording and editing, saves files to mp3 or wav. :)

It'd be a shame. It shouldn't be a matter of "envy" if you decide to abandon. I can't see what the argument could be. I'm sure however that some people would be glad to fill such a free place left...

Alternates will then be considered; as it is now, as I'e been reviewing auditions, I have been listening to them with potential roles in mind.  If there is anyone that at this time does not wish to be considered, I would appreciate being informed.

i was wondering, are you guys making the story first and freding missions around that?  or are you making missions and then connecting them with a simple story?
Or maybe even a combination?  I know you plan to mirror the series in terms of timeline. But with all new characters, how are you going to have them interacting in anything but comm chatter during missions?  Unless thats the plan, in which case neat.  Has there been discussion on what kinds of characters there will be?  More archetypal "plucky sidekick and tough no-nonsense flight lead" or are you striving for the complex, nuanced and conflicted characters of the show?  Nothing wrong with either... just wondering if the focus is on the gameplay and the story just fit over that to make it more fleshed out, or if you guys had a story you wanted to tell in BSG's universe and the game was your meduim?

Sorry, it's a secret;-)

What I CAN say is, EVERY aspect of the game is receiving special attention to detail and excellence.  That includes the story.

We can answer this part of it at least. Story first, then missions. Doing things the other way around can very quickly lead to you FREDding yourself down a dead end road and then not being able to get out again without throwing away a bunch of missions.

My first post here...

"Beyond the Red Line" appears to be shaping up very, very well.  Kudos to all of you that are involved in this project!  I look forward to playing.

I submitted some vocal demos for the game back in (I believe) February, and since that time I have changed ISPs and have a new e-mail address.  Unfortunately, in the intervening time I forgot all about letting anyone here know that (slaps self).  Is there someone who could let me know if I 'made the team'?  If not, no big deal.

Thanks!
