Title: 58th AIR WING OFFICIAL TRAINING AREA
Post by: The Rictus on May 02, 2007, 08:41:31 PM
To all pilots

The CAG has been kind enough to assign me the great privilege of acting as Wing Training Officer.

To all you nuggets who can't handle big words, that means you've gotta get through me to get your wings! ;)

Seriously. I will now be organising the training sessions on behalf of the wing. I will be setting some specific goals based around formation flying then moving on to fighting tactics and manouevers. I want to make us the tightest, best looking ships out there and that means some discipline, and us all singing from the same page. Then, when everything goes crazy in the vacuum of space, your training will kick in like instinct and we'll shine on through.

I'll ask you all to bear with me on details while I get this all devised and set out. I'll then be posting openings for training sessions. I don't want to overblow you all with intricate flight details, but both the CAG and I agree that we want to treat this seriously, and hope you do too. Some of it might start off a little boring for you experienced types, but we've gotta get everyone up to the same level.

And yes, you'll be elligible to add wings of varying prettiness to your signature as you progress :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence all.

Soon, once I've had a chance to go through some of the training material I have and prepare it. I want to have a simple start so we can all have a good ground point, but not spoon feed you all - most of us have flown plenty of sims and know how to fly. Bear with me people.

Training, awesome.
Basic flight was so damned easy. I did manage to take out 95 raiders in a gauntlet by myself tho.

Correction: 103 kills

Don't mean to brag, but.. OK, yea I do. I'm braggin' :)
Got me 113 toasters. That's more then you get when you get married ;)
And, there were a few left I would have probably killed to, but the game said
'Primary Objectives Complete' and ended the mission. Could have let me kill'em all..
Just to check - the last wings there were Optic, Papa, Range and Sierra, right?

This sounds like a good idea. Everyone knowing the same thing will make us all better, ready to act as one. Afterall, that's the point of a gaming clan, isn't it? Rather than just being a group of people with a tag at the beginning of their name...

OK Guys

I'm impressed with the kill tallies, but much like they tell the nuggets on BSG, the score isn't everything.

We're talking about working as an integrated unit, not a group of random guns. Random guns cause accidents, random guns get their wingmen shot down because they're more interested in how many stickers they can get along side their cockpits.
We will become an elite fighting force, able to work as parts of the whole.

We are a wing. We are Squadrons. Squadrons work like one body, with precise control not madness. The brain (Sqdrn Leader) either consciously or unconsciously controls his squadron during a fight. The other parts of that body either respond to signals, or instinctively know what to do. This puts the Squadron CO's in control. That in turn puts the CAG (or mission leader) in control. Then, when everything goes wrong and someone's in trouble, no-one comes home thinking "damn we could have saved them if we'd only been following orders, patrolling where the boss told us to, rather than chasing another kill".

THAT, ladies (are there any? hope so) and gentlemen is what we are trying to achieve.

I'm spending this weekend starting on formulating the first training sessions, so don't expect anything to get posted esp regarding a training session calendar until mid next week. Some of you are probably going to find some of early bits boring (formation flying etc), but the drill and repetition is the best way to learn. We'll get to the good stuff when we've all mastered the basics.

OK that's the harsh version over with.

On the positive side, best of luck everyone, I look forward to handing out a lot of shiny wings!

But remember, the shinier those wings get, the harder you're gonna have to work for them :D

Sorry fr the double post but the edit button just dissapeared on me, I wondered if anyone would be able to host a lil game/training tomorow since I wont be there from Sunday to Friday. And Rictus I talked to the CAG and this was his idea so as long as it doesnt interfere with your own plannes I hope you don't mind.If you have any training from sunday to friday thats OFFICIAL, then rictus you'll have to give me a seperate training. Seems only fair right?

Title: Training Department
Post by: The Rictus on May 14, 2007, 08:36:00 AM
To all pilots:

Slamscape is now the training No2 for the air wing, so any training questions can also be directed to him.

I am going to be out of the loop for a couple of weeks due to family issues. In my absence Slamscape will be working on the training sessions with input from me.

In the meantime I don't want to discourage the positive feedback with regard to wing training so if anyone wants to run a training session please note:

1. They will not be regarded as part of the official training roster, ie are not part of a course to get your wings, advanced wings, top gun etc.

2. Please plan a specific goal for the mission, even if it's just a dogfight practice eg do "all-on-one" then change the "one" for someone else, so everyone attending knows what's going on and gives the session some purpose.

3. Whoever organises the session will be the marshal for the session. You will be responsible for organising the pilots in-game and telling them what to do. It is your choice as the marshal whether you take part or just fly around monitoring the session, providing instructions etc.

4. The marshal will also be responsible for reporting back on the training thread about how the session went, what good/bad points etc.

im hosting a game right now, its not an official training session though.

ping: good-bad
mission type: tvt, all on green team except one.
objective: to coordinate strikes agains a singe target, with AI defending it.
game name: strike coordination

if you miss it, i'll have that same game up alot today. most likely in the afternoon if you miss it now.

edit: host modifie ships. so you dont all jump into raiders. there will be 2 sets of mtches: mk 2 mtches and mk 7 matches. the single red player gets raiders.

you may have gotten over 100 kills in a single mission, but you also have to conider what difficulty your on and how many deaths you had before you ended the mission. 100 kills is extremely easy to get. But if you got your difficulty set to hard or insane, thats what really counts. I can name countless times I have gotten over 350 kills on only 15 respawns in the mission called doomsday, but did I have it on hard or insane? no.

Post by: The Rictus on May 09, 2008, 12:27:24 PM
OK. First, and most importantly, to all of those who were really looking forward to getting their teeth into some training:

You have my utmost apologies. My family life got turned upside down for reasons I won't bore you with here. It's taken a year or so to get everything back into place and now I have time to dedicate to our wing once again.

OK that said and done:

The CAG has been very gracious in letting me return to my previous role as wing training officer. As before, I'm not looking to cheer people for how good they can shoot sh#t up. This is still about discipline and orderly combat flying.

Since things are a bit quiet round here, the CAG and I will be carrying out some private meets to discuss and develop some real tight training routines. Once that's done I'll be looking for a small number of volunteers to test these routines further. So if you're interested, post here.

Finally, this thread is a training thread, not a discussion of how much fracking killing you did out there. The first sortie you go on in BtRL Demo says it all. Are you that killcrazy nugget who went and got himself killed? If not, apply here!

Watch this space, people...
Title: Server
Post by: The Rictus on May 09, 2008, 12:30:44 PM
OK

I have plenty of bandwidth now and servers running at my house (yes, yes, don't ask...)

I am going to look at setting one up to serve out BtRL games on a regular basis. Since training is on my desk too it seems sensible.

Now all I need is like a web-based console I can access to create games, and have games that automatically generate. If anyone has any ideas on that I'd love to hear!

@ boomchoob

this is not mandatory, the original idea was that we would try to be a little more organised and make this something other than an arcade shoot-em-up. That kind of went with the idea of having 'organised' squadrons. Up to you if you want to take part, be something more than a score-builder? :)

and yes, I'm quite aware few people are watching this space, as I said myself. But you are! that's a start!

Sup y'all!
For everyone of you having problems to find people to fly with I can recommend to things:
at first the "FS2 Net Games Viewer" (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4885)
which creates on the one hand an online lobby where you can talk to people being online(which lacks in all FS2 mods and in vanilla FS2 as well) and you can check out if games are online without being into the game yourself. If you find on in the FS2 Net Games Viewer game roster, a simple double click on the server and your game is starting and joining this server....very useful.
Btw, [DW]Hunter who some of you know (and who is now called [FT]Hunter) is there quite often and always willing to support skilled pilots.

The second adress I recommend you is the growing http://www.majesticsites.net/bsgpilots/ (http://www.majesticsites.net/bsgpilots/)
, a multi game club side centred around BSG plus discussions around the TV show.
The most useful feature of BSGpilots for BTRL players is definitely the "Launchtube", a live chat where you can always find people to play with.

But I'm really happy to see the rebirth of the 58th Air Wing!:biggrin1::biggrin1:
Maybe I could join one of your training sessions? I'm not a bad pilot not at all(http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/big/6et3-2.jpg), PIES AT [FT]HUNTER, and maybe we can learn something from each other^^.

Let's get some games rolling m8s!^^
oh! and it's good to have you back Rictus! we havn't talked yet but I already heard from you!^^
Have fun and good luck mates!
