Title: What's up, what's down and what's stationary
Post by: Axem on June 16, 2012, 07:23:53 PM
The answer to all three of these is... Shadows of Lylat.

It is our regret to the fans that this mod has pretty much ceased all activity.

No real work has been done for ages sadly. We've tried multiple times to find ways to revive ourselves with focused goals and new ideas. Unfortunately, they didn't take and we were just right back where we were before.

As well we've moved on with life. Finding jobs, going to school, other fun things in life. Those things didn't help matters for the mod, but they couldn't really be helped.

So that's it. The mod is dead! It was fun while it lasted.

Hold on here, what about all that cool stuff in the screenshots?
We still have it all. What we have may be released if I can get enough people's permission. It isn't fair to you to show off all of these things and never deliver, but it also isn't fair to release without permission.

Can I continue where you left off?[/i]
There is no reason why you can't, but you'll have to go it alone. Learning to mod Freespace is very easy and there's a wealth of information on HLP on that stuff. If you would want to use any released materials in your own games or mods, you will be able to, but credits MUST be given. Everything would be released as-is, no support or help will be given.

Thank you all for your... sometimes nutty, devotion to this mod. Even when we haven't really been around at all, you stuck around. We're sorry to disappoint.

If you like space sims in general, be sure to check out Hard Light Productions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php), the community there is still very much alive with many fun mods and campaigns to play.

It's been fun. I wish we could have made it the whole way to release but I'm glad we could announce the end rather than just fading away.

Wellp. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but it's nice to get some closure. I will definitely like access to some of those models.

Thank you for the announcement, and thank you very much for the effort to keep it alive.

Have you been able to get in touch with DaBrain lately?

Well I hope you get permission to release. I really think it would be possible to knock together a space combat game from what you already have fairly easily. I think it's the feature creep to land based missions that killed you, right?

well that stinks, had I come just a month earlier I might have caught dabrain, and I was hoping for his return to rejuvinate the project. well, I would be willing to start up something new(I have made some of my own stuff, but I would need a team). actualy I have a propisition, unless dabrain returns out of no where, I would like to start up a new team, using whatever assets axem is willing to let us use, and of course some I have already made(I love making fighters-small/medium size craft, and I have some new good refs as well). so I am willing to set up a thread on the freespace modding thread, then I want to recruit a new team, wish that this hadnt ended, but I do want to see a good, complete mod with a large variety of craft, and the first priotity is space, as I am still new to this, that is the priotity to me in the first release, land combat would have to wait till later. if anyone has interest here, go to HLP to check out the my propisition. also Axem, I would really like it if you would be willing to be an advisor/consultant for my team

I must say I'm quite disappointed, I've waited patiently for 7 years just to be told it was for nothing. I'm not blaming you guys on the team, I understand how life tends to get in the way, I'm just sad to hear that such a promising mod won't see the light of day as it was first imaged. Thanks anyhow fellas, it's been fun

You know.. I know nothing about creating mods for games, or anything like that. But perhaps i can learn for this?

I know this is disappointing, but things go as they do and all the team members have been kept away from the mod for far too long.

So this is a big and sincere sorry, and an equally big and sincere thanks for your support.

Some of us have already replied positively to the content releasing request. We'll see in the (near) future what can be shared with the community.

Isn't there a way you could find replacements to carry on the mod?  Theres so much material already finished that it would be a shame to just let it go.

I will release much of the music I wrote for this at some point.

I can't believe its going to end like this.. I was so sure you guys would release.. :(
SoL was my example for my own starfox mod. We are always looking up to you, whether its on the plan of professionalism or Aesthetics. Qualities that even got you guys featured in a few video game press articles.

Anyways, I know nothing about the freespace engine but I'm a programmer, so depending on what you guys can release and the state it is in, I could maybe try to make it at least playable if it isn't already. I can't speak for my team though, it would be just me. So if anybody else would like to eventually help with that, contact me.

Any chances you guys will write a post-mortem ? I think it would be very useful.

I am starting a new starfox mod for FSO, though I kinda plan to make my own models for most of the fighters at least kinda hoping to see if I can get some of the bigger ships perhaps, but thats for another day. and Psy-Commando, if you want to check me out I am on HLP http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=81149.0

It’s definitely sad news guys. That is for sure, a lot of hard work has been put into this project. A lot of us wanted to see it succeed. It was great working with team. I loved working with people from all over the world on this project.

I will be keeping ShadowsOfLylat.net (http://shadowsoflylat.net/) up for as long as the domain lasts and I don't have to pay for it again. I do hope soon that we can get permission to release the content we did have and if so I will make sure its hosted for download for all you guys. Who knows maybe one of you will lead the next fan-made Star Fox game to completion!

I wish I had more to say but the shots been called and we just couldn't seem to rise again like we had in the past. In my mind this also calls into question what will happen to Game-Warden as I think SoL has been bringing in most of the traffic an that's not very much. I think the only other project that seems to still trucking along is Stargate SG-1: Earth's Defence (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=34) which had an update a week ago.

I wish you all on your journeys as we each go our separate ways, and who knows maybe some of us will work together on a future project. As always anyone can reach me via private message on Game-Warden (http://www.game-warden.com/).

Thanks Brox, it means a lot to us that you'll keep the site going, and will host the assets if they're released.
I also am a little concerned for the future of game-warden. I wonder if there is anyway to archive everything here onto hard-light, and convince jc4jc to move his mod over?

Anyway, mando's mod could be promising if we get a few more members, and I have something of my own in the works. SoL will not be forgotten, and it will live on in us!

Yup.

To be honest, I think if you get the rights to SoL's stuff you could release something fairly quickly. SoL had a similar problem to Diaspora with feature creep and trying to make sure that everything they had was the best quality. In SoL's case it looks like it was terminal.

If you simply decide to get something out and improve upon it later, I can't see that taking too long.

@karajorma:
Yeah, that's pretty much what I had in mind.

The way I see it, is that you guys seem to be out of motivation, members, and time.
I think we can surely find that around.

It is quite a disappointment, this is probably the oldest mod and the one I've followed the longest. :sigh:

If those that started the mod don't mind, it would be awesome if you released the models and perhaps a plot synopsis and features you were going to include in SoL. Perhaps I can survive some or most of the mod in my Starfox RTS?

I tried that 2 years ago trying to get some help for my starfox rts, never heard back myself, and some of this stuff is a tad bit too much for a rts, and wont look nearly as good
Title: What's up, what's down and what's stationary
Post by: Fara Phoenix on June 26, 2012, 07:38:41 PM
I'm...not surprised, in a way.
I also don't know whether to be sad, or to simply accept the fact and from then on disregard the mod's existence as it has become irrelevant - in approximately ninety-five per cent of given cases I only play finished projects, and therefore cannot judge this one.

I think some of their designs might fit into my RTS: http://www.moddb.com/mods/starfox-rts

Though I really don't know the extent of what they've done other then the few ships that appeared in the SoL trailers.

honestly, im not really suprised with the year-space between updates. I think the sol team owes it to the fan-base to release the material and let someone else take the reigns if they want.

count me in for any sort of revival btw

Well I don't think it's fair to complain about the fans. I think feature creep is what killed SoL in the end. It's one reason why I'd urge whoever takes their place to get something out quickly.

Please GPL or release what you have under a similar license. This removes any questions when working with the content. :)

This is a huge disappointment, I've been watching this mod since I was in the 7th grade, and I've been supporting it every step of the way. Heck, Lylat Reloaded got it's start here as a result of our devotion to the series. I hope that you find a way to deliver all of the completed content to the fans that have spent many hours here on the forums. But thanks for trying guys, what you got finished you did well with.

GPL would be a bad idea. Creative Commons would be much better.

Just posting this here for people who get updates on this thread there is exciting news on the news section of the website http://www.shadowsoflylat.net/

This will probably be one of the last news updates. The only other updates will probably be about new screenshots and concept art being released to the public. I hope you all enjoy this and who knows maybe another team will pick it up.

Wow, that's a pretty hardcore bummer. Sorry you guys never had a push to release, that really sucks. Totally understandable though, I wanted to do a trilogy with Tales of Corneria originally... definitely died out only after the first game was released, and that wasn't nearly as polished of an experience as what you were aiming for.

I'll definitely download the assets and give the demo a try sometime - I'd like to do a feature on SF fan games at some point still, so we'll see what happens. Good luck to you all with what does keep you busy in life, and thank you for bringing closure to the project rather than forgetting it was ever there.

I've downloaded the assets but cause of Diaspora I haven't had the chance to play with them. I'm kinda surprised by the lack of comments though. Even unfinished I'd have expected to hear something about the game.

I'm working through 'em, but there's actually a huge amount of actually finished assets and stuff. But I've been busy and haven't really been able to get a complete picture of what's there and what isn't.

I didn't mean it that way. At the time, I just got frustrated with the person who said that SoL owes it to the fans. I'm grateful we got an asset release, but I never felt that we were obliged to have one is all.

Oh well...

Wonder how Lylat Reloaded and the StarFoxRTS are doing..

Last time I checked the RTS poor Nephalim was getting harassed by Zelda fans lol , and Reloaded seemed to be silent but had a release atleast.

Sucks when good things go sour, like a nice bowl of yummy cereal but the milk has expired.

Excellent work, Dilrd! Good job, have a cookie!

Anyway, the team released the SoL assets, and Mando is working on a mod using those plus his own. I'm helping and have something planned of my own. Come stop by on hard-light.net, and find it in the Modding board.
