Title: Starfox RTS
Post by: The_Undying_Nephalim on July 06, 2011, 06:39:15 AM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yoh3G8lgDX8

It's been a long time since I popped by here on SoL. Some might vaguely remember my name attached to the mod known as "Project Kursed" that faded away several years ago. Ever since I detached myself from that I've spent my time learning to make models and work with various game engines. I've deemed my abilities acceptable now to resurrect a Starfox idea I've had for years now.

The goal of this game is to present Starfox in a psudeo-RTS style game. Players will choose their fighter pilots, command a squadron, and customize and upgrade the fighter craft in their squadron. The single player campaign will follow the exploits of Krystal as she leaves the Starfox team and joins the Cornerian Army. The story will unfold with her discovering some secrets of her past, most notably the fate of her homeworld Cerinia as the Cornerian army begins uncovering ruins of her extinct species. Multiplater and Custom battles will allow players to assume the role of several different factions in addition to the Cornerian army, such as Andross' forces and the Aparoids. Players will construct bases, build up an economy, and field armies of ships as they do battle.

I've no release date yet, though I plan on releasing playable demos regularly. As the saying goes, "It's done when it's done."

I LOVE YOU UNDYING NEPHALIM !

I was following your Project Kursed as well on your board. (too bad it ended up abandonned)
But I guess it was for the better because you're coming with THIS !
I'm a fanatic of RTS games, so StarFox + RTS = pure winsauce.

Is it a mod from some other game ? Or are you using an engine to build up everything ?

Also, lol'd at Marek.

It is a bit unfortunate PK ended up going under, though many of the things I threw into that are going to show up in this. The problem was mostly that no one was doing their part and thus nothing was getting done, and whenever I'd go out of my way to do something like make a 3D model the actual 3D modelers would get upset and say it's not the right style, it's their job, etc etc.

Technically it could be considered a mod, though the engine is prepping to go standalone and open source. More information on it can be found here: http://www.fleetops.net/home.html
If you like RTS's I actually highly recommend trying Fleet Operations, as well as my other RTS I made: http://www.moddb.com/mods/sigma . Might give some insight into how the Starfox one will look and feel.

On another note, is it possible to hide an image on these forums in spoiler wraps so they don't take up lots of space on the thread? Until then forgive me for the pictures stretching out the page.... :nervous:

And actually, Unknown Target on the Hard-Light forum just recently posted a plan for something similar in concept. Just FYI, maybe you can help each other.

Alright thanks. (I'm already advertising your work among few french fans)
I'll try that out when I can, I have plenty of time. But first I'm currently downloading Hyrule Total War. I love that series too, and you did a nice job with that, from what I seen in the videos.
Edit: I played it, but could only make a quick battle Hylian vs Gerudo. When I click on Custom Battle, the game just crashes. :/

Oh btw, I'll reiterate the proposition I make for every SF fangame: I can take care of English->French translation if you eventually make one.

Oh and Fay is better w/o the glasses :)

Technical problems with Hyrule: Total War should probably be brought up on the Total War forums (I'll give you a link if you've not found it already.) No harm in asking though.... did you install the Kingdoms expansion pack first? :nervous:

Merci, if you'd like to make a French translation when it's done that would be epic. biggrin

Just a random shot of Krystal and the Krazoa, whom will also show up in the game:

Go away at once Psygonis, I asked first ! And I'm the one studying foreign languages here ! Leave some credits to me god dammit, I can't draw nor code !
O GOD Y?

Back on off-topic, yeah I did install Kingdoms.
But don't worry, it worked after all, though it's a little bugged. I also want to let you know that when you are looking from afar, the troops turn back to regular Medieval II troops. You probably already know that but I tell you just in case. And nah I don't want to sign up on another forum, so I'll stop talking about Hyrule Total War at once.

*meanwhile at once*

Back on topic now, Krystal's model is pretty nice here, I was not so convinced at first when seeing the video, but it looks good after all.

Post by: The_Undying_Nephalim on July 18, 2011, 07:44:24 PM
@Fox's_Feather
The soldiers turning into M2 soldiers actually can't be fixed, as there's no way to get custom sprite files in the engine. The engine basically transforms the 3D models into sprites when you zoom out far enough since rendering thousands upon thousands of soldiers would crash most PC's in a heartbeat.

Most of the complaints I've heard about the Krystal model are A) The head looks like it was ripped from Assault or B) her tail is not furry at all. For one the intent was was to make it look like the assault head since that's my favorite design of her. For the fur though I guess I have no excuse. :D
I'm glad you seem to like it now though. :cool1:

@Flaming Cobra
She wears the goggles to scare people away. :p

I'm not done with Miyu but I guess I could show a WIP of her so far:

(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa50/UndyingNephalim/MiyuProto1.jpg)

As for Hyrule Total War it's a Zelda mod I've been working on for awhile: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=421448

Oh I see, too bad for the sprites. Nvm it's good anyway. And I wouldn't spite on such great work done for the fans.

I don't mind if she's ripped for Assault. I like her too in there. Didn't really pay attention to the tail, but it's true you could spend some more time on it :p

I think same goes for Miyu's head right here, not furry enough, but you told yourself it's unfinished, so I'm waiting to see a finished version.

@Flaming Cobra
I recall Miyu only ever having one earring in her left ear, at least according to her sprite in SF2:
(http://images.wikia.com/starfox/images/d/db/Miyu.JPG)

I guess I can try and work out fur effects, sadly they don't work in the engine since they are Maya specific (which is why I've not bothered with them yet)

@Fox's_Feather

@Unknown Target
Yeah the Fleet Ops engine originated from Star Trek: Armada II. It's pretty much a modern version of it that supports things found in modern games: http://www.fleetops.net/home.html

@Brockenstein
Yeah the Fur effects in Maya are not very friendly... Not to mention they increase render times by like...... 300%. :shaking:
I think I am going to try and use either standard bump maps or normal maps to get fur effects as a substitute.

Okay. Which part don't you understand in "Real Time Strategy" ?

Krystal will probably be more like a hero unit among your troops. Much like Jim Raynor in Starcraft.

As Fox's Feather said, it's a Real Time Strategy game and you'll actually be commanding multiple fighter craft at once in addition to the characters. You'll mostly be commanding as Krystal but here's a list of some other characters you'll get to shoot down enemies with:

- Fay
- Bill Grey
- Fox McCloud
- Falco
- Miyu

Upppdaaateeee!

Monarchy One really got better since Project Kursed too. I mean it was nice back then, but now it really sounds professional.

Also, talking about music, I'm just wondering, will they just play one by one, or is there some kind of system that triggers them depending on the situation ?
That's quite recent in strategy games, RTS among them. Don't know if you ever played Red Alert 3, IMO it was not as good as the two first for the gameplay, but I really liked that system triggering music depending on the threat level.

I mean when you started the game there was a calm music, yet tenseful that helped to build up a nervous ambiant at the wake of a battle, then at the first units skirmishing there were a more rocking music, and if there was a huge battle, a really dynamic music that pulled you in the heat of the fightings, plus it was depending on wether you were losing or winning.

So if ever it happens to be possible, it would be really cool. :)

Right now it's set up to play tracks one by one, but I do want to eventually have situational music like in Red Alert 3 and Medieval 2. The Fleet Ops devs have mentioned implementing that ability into the engine. To my knowledge it actually currently is possible since they redid the engine's sound engine...  just not sure how to do it as of now. :o

Title: Starfox RTS
Post by: Psygonis on July 30, 2011, 02:46:16 AM
An engine can use other engines as components. "engine" is quite a vague term after all. Gaming engines usually use such dedicated "sub"-engines for sound, AI or network...
Title: Starfox RTS
Post by: The_Undying_Nephalim on July 30, 2011, 02:52:18 AM
Indeed, the FO team has been adding in components from other engines as well as writing their own software to add to the aged Armada engine. In terms of sound they recently added in FMOD Ex, which is the sound engine that Starcraft II, Bioshock, and Crysis use (to name a few). As far as I know there's no industry standard word for the sum total of engine components.

Well that's awesome.

Engine related but thread unrelated, is it possible within a same game to use different engines (other than sound AI and such) ? Like one for a RTS part and another for a FPS part ?
Title: Starfox RTS
Post by: Psygonis on July 30, 2011, 07:18:08 PM
Engines, as such can work independently of their runtime context. That's what Nephalim implied when he said he uses a sound engine present both RTS and FPS games.

That's because sound work the same way in all these games. This may not be the case for other aspects of the games, such as physics and collision, or AI.
Title: Starfox RTS
Post by: The_Undying_Nephalim on July 30, 2011, 09:51:19 PM
Technically it is possible to combine two different game engine types, though it's usually a very difficult process. For instance it would be a nightmare to combine the Armada Engine (which is largely Lua) and the Unreal Engine (Unreal script), but it is possible. In most cases when a game demands for two different gameplay types though it's all usually included in the main engine rather then combining two different ones. Coincidentally, the Armada engine is actually an updated version of the engine used by the game Battlezone (1998), which just so happened to be a FPS - RTS hybrid.

Alright I see.

After all it was done in Spore too, I really loved the concept, but was disappointed that each phase was too short (and spatial phase too long).
But I really liked the civilization phase that let us customize our own vehicles, and I wish anyone would eventually recycle that idea for a full RTS game.

Basically the ideal game would be the strategy part of Total War and battles like C&C series, with FPS/shooter events. :)
This was partly done in Middle Earth too where you had that strategy map and battles similar to Age of Empire but it was too limited.

But I guess I'm asking too much.

Okay, Undying, I'm counting on you to do all that one day. Like, your next game will do all that OK ? It's a deal then. :nod:

Fleet Operations technically does not need Star Trek Armada II to play, and while it asks for a CD there's a simple way around it. They've actually just cleared all legal issues with the engine and it's going open source very soon. You can get Fleet Ops here: http://www.fleetops.net/home.html

I'd not recommend buying A2.... it's quite expensive. :nervous:

What's the simple way around it ? Too late, I already got it, but it'b be better to explain for others. Not bought though.

Oh and I just can't find the Mod folder in fleet op folder. I did the recommended installation though.
And when I launch fleet op, there is no Mod Options anyway.

If there's no mods folder (I presume you are using windows Vista or 7?) just make a new folder called "mods" in the data folder and paste all the Starfox stuff in there. When you start up Fleet Ops just go to options > mod options > Starfox RTS and tah dah it should work.

Some Anglar previews now:
